In the United Arab Emirates’ streamlined visa system, a Green Visa is a permanent residency visa. Freelancers, skilled workers, investors, or partners can obtain a 5-year residency without a sponsor. Usually, a residency permit may require sponsorship from a family member or employer. This move by Kingdom authorities offers global talent a secure and flexible option to establish a long-term residence in the UAE.

Three categories of individuals can apply for a green visa: skilled workers, freelancers, and investors or partners.

According to the international platform EconomyMiddleEast, skilled workers can apply for a green visa to qualify for a 5-year residency in the UAE. To be eligible, they must hold a first-, second-, or third-level position as classified by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE), earn a minimum of AED 15,000, provide a valid employment contract, and hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent diploma or training.

Guidelines have been established for freelancers and investors who wish to apply for a green visa. To be eligible, you must obtain a permit from MoHRE and provide evidence of a bachelor’s degree or specialised diploma. Additionally, if you are a freelancer seeking a green visa, you must have earned an annual income of at least AED360,000 over the past two years.

Partners and investors must adhere to strict guidelines to get the Green Visa. First, they must get their investment approved by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Ports Security (ICP) and demonstrate an investment of at least AED1 million. Second, they must obtain approval from local authorities. If the applicant owns or is a partner in multiple businesses, they can combine all their investments to reach the AED1 million mark.

Lastly, the primary question is: What are the benefits of green visas for individuals?

More extended residency period: Before introducing the Green Visa, expatriates were usually granted visas valid for only two or three years. However, with the new Green Visa, one can now stay in the UAE for up to five years, which offers greater stability and flexibility for those living and working there.

Grace period: After the expiration of your Green Visa, people will have six months as a grace period to either adjust their status and secure a new visa or plan their departure without incurring any fines or penalties.

Family sponsorship: The Green Visa provides several benefits for sponsoring family members. First, it allows them to sponsor male children up to the age of 25 and removes the age limit for unmarried daughters. Second, it enables children of determination to be funded regardless of age. Finally, one can sponsor first-degree relatives with a residency duration that matches theirs. Overall, the Green Visa simplifies and improves the process of sponsoring family members.
