Over 100 workers turn Dubai construction site into sustainability hub on World Environment Day
Employees collect 10 bags of waste during community cleanup
DUBAI – A major construction site in Dubai became a centre of environmental learning and action as the Civil and Infrastructure Branch (CIB) of China State Construction Engineering Corporation Middle East (CSCEC-ME) marked World Environment Day 2026 at Project R1013/2F, the Improvement of Al Shindagha Corridor.
More than 100 employees representing seven nationalities – Chinese, Pakistani, Indian, Nepali, Bangladeshi, Egyptian and Ghanaian – took part in a programme designed to combine education, collective responsibility and practical environmental action.
Rather than focusing on ceremony, the event centred on measurable activities aimed at strengthening sustainability awareness across the workforce.
Building awareness
The programme began with an environmental awareness session attended by project team members from across the site. Discussions focused on the importance of environmental protection, sustainable construction practices and the role individuals can play in reducing environmental impacts during daily operations.
Participants were encouraged to engage actively with the session, contributing to discussions on how environmental responsibilities can be integrated into routine site activities. The awareness programme concluded with a formal environmental pledge, with employees collectively reaffirming their commitment to protecting the environment both within and beyond the project boundaries.
Environmental signage activities followed, officially launching the project's environmental campaign and reinforcing key sustainability messages throughout the workforce. The initiative helped set the tone for the remainder of the day’s activities and highlighted the importance of maintaining environmental awareness throughout the project lifecycle.
Taking action
The second phase of the programme shifted from discussion to implementation through a site-wide cleanup campaign. Workers and staff joined forces to promote cleanliness and strengthen housekeeping standards across the project area.
The effort extended beyond the project premises, with teams carrying out cleanup activities in surrounding areas. Approximately 10 bags of waste were collected during the campaign, providing a visible demonstration of the impact that collective action can achieve when environmental awareness is paired with direct participation.
Tree planting activities were also organised at the site office, adding a lasting environmental element to the day’s programme. Alongside the planting initiative, employees took part in a creative reuse project that transformed discarded plastic bottles into desk planters. The activity was designed to promote reuse as a practical daily habit while encouraging workers to consider simple ways of reducing waste.
Daily commitment
While World Environment Day served as a focal point for the activities, many of the environmental measures highlighted during the event are already embedded in the project’s day-to-day operations.
The site operates a waste segregation system covering metal, wood and general waste streams, supported by dedicated recycling bins. Environmental awareness is reinforced throughout the year through regular toolbox talks and workforce engagement programmes.
Dust suppression remains a key environmental priority, with treated water being used to minimise dust generation across the project. Fuel-efficiency measures and anti-idling requirements are also applied to equipment and vehicles operating on site.
Given the project's proximity to water, additional safeguards have been implemented to protect the surrounding marine and coastal environment. Spill prevention and control systems form part of the environmental management framework designed to minimise risks to nearby ecosystems.
The project also addresses workforce welfare through heat-stress management measures while maintaining environmental compliance and operational productivity. By the end of the World Environment Day programme, the results were visible across the site, from collected waste and newly planted trees to a workforce carrying forward commitments made during the day’s activities.
