Dubai: Al Faghi Street in Al Khawaneej renamed Sheikh Zayed Farm Street in historic tribute
Decision reflects commitment to preserving cultural landmarks within modern urban landscape
DUBAI – Authorities in Dubai have officially renamed Al Faghi Street in Al Khawaneej as Sheikh Zayed Farm Street in a move that underscores the nation’s deep-rooted historical legacy and commemorates one of the UAE’s most significant Union-era landmarks.
The decision was announced by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority in collaboration with the Dubai Road Naming Committee.
The change recognises the importance of Sheikh Zayed Farm in Al Khawaneej, which President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has declared the UAE’s third Union site, alongside Union House and Arqoob Al Sedira.
The renaming reflects an effort to embed national memory within Dubai’s urban identity while preserving its cultural and historical narrative.
Sheikh Zayed Farm
Sheikh Zayed Farm holds a pivotal place in the UAE’s founding journey. In March 1971, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan stayed at the farm for nearly two weeks, during which he held a series of intensive meetings with the Rulers of the emirates.
These discussions formed a crucial turning point in the path towards unification. The gatherings contributed directly to the groundwork for the Union Agreement and the drafting of the Constitution, which was later signed in July 1971, marking the formal establishment of the UAE.
The renaming initiative aligns with Dubai’s broader vision of linking its road network with sites of national significance, ensuring that urban infrastructure reflects the country’s heritage.
The transformation of Al Faghi Street into Sheikh Zayed Farm Street reinforces the importance of integrating historical memory into everyday public spaces. It highlights how key locations such as Sheikh Zayed Farm continue to symbolise unity, leadership and vision in the UAE’s development journey.
