5 ways Dubai is building a global sports economy powerhouse
Strategic plans reshape the future of sport and business
DUBAI – Dubai is strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading sports destinations by transforming sporting excellence into a growing economic sector.
Through a combination of international events, advanced infrastructure, investment opportunities and sports innovation, the emirate has created an ecosystem where sport connects with tourism, business and technology.
The Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033 highlights the emirate’s ambition to expand the role of sport in the economy, with targets that include increasing the sector’s annual contribution to GDP from Dh10.17 billion to Dh18.3 billion by 2033.
Expanding economic impact
Sport has become an important part of Dubai’s future economy, supported by the growth of sports tourism, commercial sponsorships, broadcasting rights, digital content and technology-driven opportunities.
The strategy aims to increase attendance at major sporting events from 1.67 million people annually to more than 4.1 million, while also increasing the number of major sporting events hosted in Dubai by up to 250 percent.
With the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 placing focus on new economic sectors, sport continues to develop beyond competition itself, creating opportunities across hospitality, aviation, retail, media and services.
Hosting world-class events
Dubai’s international sporting calendar continues to expand, with more than 400 local and international sporting events hosted every year across different disciplines. The emirate also welcomes around 100 training camps for leading international clubs and national teams.
Major events have helped establish Dubai as a destination capable of attracting athletes, fans and organisations from around the world.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships remains one of the emirate’s most recognised tournaments, bringing together top tennis players and receiving global media attention. The event has played a role in strengthening Dubai’s reputation as a host city for elite international sport.
Salah Tahlak, Tournament Director of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, said international tournaments have become an influential platform supporting tourism, investment and Dubai’s global promotion.
The Dubai Marathon continues to attract thousands of runners from different nationalities each year, generating activity across hotels, aviation, retail and tourism-related sectors.
Ahmed Al Kamali, General Coordinator of the Dubai Marathon, highlighted the economic value created by major sporting events through tourism, investment and media exposure.
Growing sporting diversity
Dubai’s sports landscape has expanded across a wide range of disciplines, including golf, mixed martial arts, cricket, cycling, running and marine sports.
This broad calendar allows the emirate to attract different fan groups while creating new opportunities for businesses connected to sporting events.
The launch of the Dubai Basketball project and the team’s participation in the European ABA League marked a new chapter in Dubai’s efforts to strengthen its role in international sports investment.
The emirate has also emerged as a growing hub for esports, a rapidly expanding global industry connected to digital entertainment, technology and content creation.
Events such as the Dubai Esports and Games Festival have supported the growth of this sector by attracting players, visitors and gaming communities.
Ahmed Al Khaja, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, said such events reflect the increasing contribution of esports and gaming to Dubai’s creative economy.
Attracting global teams
Dubai has become a preferred destination for football training camps, with leading clubs and national teams choosing the emirate for seasonal preparations.
The combination of modern sporting facilities, world-class hospitality and suitable training conditions has helped Dubai strengthen its position among international sporting organisations.
These camps generate economic activity beyond the pitch, supporting hotels, transport, tourism services and other industries linked to sports travel.
Building the future of sport
Dubai continues to expand its influence through platforms such as the Dubai International Sports Conference, which brings together sports leaders, experts and athletes to discuss the future of the industry.
The conference focuses on areas including sports investment, innovation, technology and artificial intelligence, reflecting the changing landscape of global sport.
Major events hosted in Dubai also provide international visibility through television coverage, digital platforms and global media networks, showcasing the emirate’s venues, landmarks and sporting capabilities to audiences worldwide.
