Moon-sighting committee confirms end of Ramadan after 30 days
DUBAI – Saudi Arabia has officially announced that Eid Al Fitr 2026 will be observed on Friday, March 20, following confirmation that the Shawwal crescent moon was not sighted.
The moon-sighting committee was convened today to verify the new moon, marking the end of Ramadan after 30 days of fasting.
The announcement aligns with the Islamic tradition of determining the start of a new month through lunar observation. Authorities emphasised that the verification process is a cornerstone of Islamic lunar calendrical practice, ensuring accuracy in marking religious observances.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development stated that Eid holidays for employees in the private and non-profit sectors would begin on Wednesday, March 18, lasting four days in accordance with the Saudi Labour Law.
Mohammed Al Ruzaiqi, spokesperson for the ministry, noted that the announcement aimed to provide clarity for both employers and employees, allowing organisations to plan work schedules while maintaining operational continuity in essential sectors and safeguarding workers’ rights to the festive break.
