Comedian marks milestone with largest crowd in festival’s history
DUBAI – Zakir Khan has made history at the Dubai Comedy Festival, setting a new benchmark for comedy performances in the city.
The Indian stand-up star closed this year’s festival with a sold-out show at the Coca-Cola Arena, achieving the record for the most tickets ever sold by a comedian at the event.
This marks a triumphant return for the comedian, who also performed to a full house at last year’s festival. His 2025 appearance, however, surpassed all expectations – not only breaking records but also leaving a lasting emotional imprint on both the performer and his fans.

Following the historic performance, Zakir took to Instagram to share a heartfelt post with his 7 million followers. “We did it. The biggest show in the history of the Dubai Comedy Festival and at the Coca-Cola Arena,” he wrote, reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings in India to global recognition.
He described Dubai as “deeply special,” recalling how his first memories of the city came from a relative who once dreamed of working there in construction. “During the standing ovation, I teared up thinking that the very arena chanting my name today might have been built by some of those same cousins,” Zakir shared.
The emotional post quickly went viral, drawing praise for its honesty and humility. He also expressed gratitude to fellow comedian Nishant Tanwar, who joined him on stage as part of the milestone show.

The festival, known for bringing together some of the biggest names in comedy, continues to grow in scale and global attention each year.
Zakir’s sold-out performance was one of the festival’s most talked-about events, with audience videos and photos flooding social media. His show was a blend of observational humour, heartfelt storytelling, and his signature “desi” wit – hallmarks that have made him a household name across South Asia and beyond.
From Sakht Launda to superstar
Born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Zakir Khan rose to fame after winning India’s Best Stand-Up Comedian on Comedy Central in 2012. His career took off through YouTube, where his relatable sketches about middle-class life, love, and personal struggles struck a chord with millions.
Known for his catchphrase Sakht Launda, meaning a tough guy who doesn’t fall for love easily, Zakir’s humour bridges languages – blending Hindi, Urdu, and local dialects with effortless charm. His stand-up specials Haq Se Single, Kaksha Gyarvi, and Tathastu on Amazon Prime Video further cemented his reputation as one of India’s finest storytellers.
Beyond comedy, Zakir is also a poet, writer, and trained sitar player – a talent inherited from his grandfather, the classical musician Ustad Moinuddin Khan. His love for rhythm and words continues to shape his performances, making each show a mix of laughter and introspection.
