ABU DHABI – The Department of Municipalities and Transport has opened 16 new parks across the Al Shamkhah district of Abu Dhabi City, expanding access to public recreational spaces as part of its ongoing liveability strategy.

The initiative aims to support healthier lifestyles and create environments that encourage social interaction among residents. It also reflects the emirate’s broader focus on strengthening community infrastructure across residential areas.

Community spaces

The newly opened parks feature expansive green areas designed to accommodate a wide range of outdoor activities.

Across the sites, residents can access eight dedicated fitness zones and 25 sports courts, offering facilities for exercise, training and organised sport. Walking paths and shaded seating areas have also been incorporated to encourage regular use by visitors of all ages.

Inclusive facilities

Families are a central focus of the project, with 26 children’s play areas included across the parks. These spaces are designed to be inclusive and accessible, ensuring children of different ages and abilities can participate safely. The layout of the parks supports both active play and quieter recreational use, creating balanced environments for daily visits.

Wider rollout

Eng Khalifa Abdulla Alqemzi, Head of Capital Projects Execution – Abu Dhabi at the Department of Municipalities and Transport, said the parks were designed to enrich residents’ quality of life by offering safe and enjoyable spaces for relaxation, socialising and outdoor activities. He added that, in line with the Year of Community, the parks aim to strengthen social bonds and enhance a sense of belonging.

The Al Shamkhah openings follow other community parks launched earlier this year in areas including Al Falah district and Mohamed bin Zayed City. These projects form part of the department’s wider efforts to support active, well-integrated neighbourhoods and improve everyday living across Abu Dhabi.
