UAE’s remote work residence visa: Minimum income, eligibility, and application process
Visa allows one-year residency without UAE-based employment
DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates is making it easier than ever for remote workers to live in one of the world’s most vibrant cities without needing local employment.
The Remote Work Residence Visa, also known as Dubai’s Virtual Work Visa, allows foreign nationals to live in Dubai while continuing to work for companies based outside the UAE.
This one-year renewable visa is designed for digital nomads, remote employees, freelancers, and business owners who meet specific criteria. It offers a unique opportunity to enjoy Dubai’s lifestyle and services while maintaining a global career.
Eligibility criteria
To qualify for the Remote Work Visa, applicants must be employed by a non-UAE-based company and be able to perform their duties remotely. The minimum monthly income requirement is $3,500, or its equivalent in other currencies, which amounts to approximately Dh12,856. This figure must be supported with payslips and six months’ worth of bank statements.
Applicants must also hold a valid passport with at least six months’ validity, and possess health insurance that covers the UAE for at least one year. A colour passport-sized photo on a white background is also required.
Entrepreneurs and freelancers working with international clients are eligible, provided they meet the same financial and documentation criteria. The visa is open to nationals of any country, although some may be required to submit additional documentation or pay extra fees.
How to apply
The process for applying varies depending on your location. If you are outside the UAE and do not have visa-free access, you may need to enter the country on a visit visa first. However, those eligible for visa-on-arrival can start their application either before or after entering Dubai.
Applications from abroad can be submitted via the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs Dubai (GDRFAD), while applicants already in Dubai can apply online or visit an AMER service centre.
Key documents to submit include:
- A valid passport with at least six months’ validity
- Proof of remote employment or business ownership
- Confirmation of a minimum monthly income of $3,500
- A recent payslip and six months of bank statements
- Proof of health insurance valid in the UAE
- A passport-style colour photo
It is essential that employment documents are on company letterhead and signed or stamped by an authorised representative. A mandatory medical fitness test will also be required before the visa is issued.
Cost and validity
The cost of the Virtual Work Visa varies based on location and additional services used. For applicants outside Dubai, the base fee is $101 (Dh372.50) as of August 2024. This includes VAT and may change without notice.
For those applying in Dubai through AMER centres, the total cost is $334 (Dh1,225.90), including all administrative fees and VAT. Meanwhile, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) lists a total fee of Dh350 for the virtual work residency visa, broken down into Dh100 for the application, Dh100 for issuance, Dh100 for smart services, and Dh50 for ICP e-services.
Once issued, the visa is valid for one year and can be renewed if the applicant continues to meet the eligibility requirements. After receiving the visa, the holder must enter the UAE within 60 days from the date of issuance.
What else you need to know
Visa holders are allowed to sponsor their spouse and children for residency, schooling, and other services. However, additional documentation and fees apply for each family member sponsored under the visa.
It’s important to note that the Remote Work Visa does not permit the holder to work for any UAE-based company or organisation. All employment must be with entities based outside the country.
If your application is incomplete or incorrect, it may be returned. Applications returned three times are automatically cancelled. If rejected, only the visa issuance fee is refundable, and refunds are processed via credit card within six months.
Applicants do not need to be physically present in the UAE to apply. The entire process can be handled online via the ICP portal or the GDRFAD site, making it convenient for professionals worldwide.
