Dubai to see wider Flame Tree planting as Sheikh Hamdan highlights symbol of beauty
Seasonal blooms set to transform city streets and homes
DUBAI – Dubai is set to witness an expanded presence of one of its most visually striking trees following new directives from His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The Crown Prince of Dubai, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, has called for the wider planting of the Flame Tree across streets, homes, recreational areas and public parks. The move aims to enhance the emirate’s urban greenery while reinforcing its seasonal character.

The directive was shared alongside a video celebrating the Flame Tree, known for its wide canopy, lush green foliage and vivid orange-red blossoms. Blooming annually from May until the end of July, the tree brings a distinct burst of colour to the city during the summer months.

Speaking during a meeting with Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Future Foundation, Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the tree’s cultural and visual significance. He noted that when the Flame Tree blooms, it adds vibrancy to homes, streets and public spaces, contributing to what he described as a city “full of life and beauty”.
Authorities have also been instructed to distribute Flame Tree seedlings to residents interested in planting them in private spaces such as homes and farms. The initiative is expected to encourage community participation in greening efforts while extending the tree’s presence beyond public landscapes.
Natural benefits
The Flame Tree is particularly valued for its environmental advantages. It grows rapidly in its early years and naturally develops a broad canopy without requiring intensive maintenance. The canopy can spread up to 15 metres, offering significant shade and reducing ground temperatures beneath it by around 5°C.
Well adapted to Dubai’s hot and humid climate, the tree thrives in both sandy and clay soils, provided they are well drained. Its resilience makes it a practical choice for urban planting, while its lifespan of up to 60 years ensures long-term impact. Typically reaching heights of up to 12 metres, the Flame Tree takes around a decade to mature fully, establishing itself as a lasting feature in the city’s landscape.
