Sheikh Nahyan rides Etihad Rail passenger train, calls project milestone for UAE's future
Network expansion to Dubai, Sharjah and Al Dhafra already scheduled
ABU DHABI – The UAE's newly launched passenger rail service has received another high-profile endorsement, with Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan describing the project as a strategic investment in the nation's future after travelling from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah aboard an Etihad Rail passenger train.
The Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence travelled from Mohamed bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi to Fujairah Station just days after scheduled passenger services began operating across the country. The journey highlighted the government's continued support for one of the UAE's most significant national infrastructure projects, which is expected to transform travel, strengthen connectivity between emirates and support long-term economic growth.
Sheikh Nahyan was accompanied by Abdullah Sultan Al Nuaimi, Minister of Justice, and was welcomed on board by Etihad Rail Chief Executive Officer Shadi Malak.

During the journey, Sheikh Nahyan met Emirati nationals working aboard the train and received a detailed briefing on the railway's operating systems, passenger services and day-to-day operations.
He also experienced the facilities available to travellers, including services designed to meet international standards for safety, comfort and convenience. Passengers benefit from modern onboard amenities intended to deliver a seamless travel experience while supporting the UAE's ambition to establish a world-class public transport network.

The visit also included tours of both Mohamed bin Zayed City Station and Fujairah Station, where Sheikh Nahyan reviewed operational facilities, smart passenger services and station management systems.
Speaking during the visit, Sheikh Nahyan described the launch of passenger rail services as a source of national pride and a major milestone in the UAE's transport sector.
He said the railway represents far more than a new means of transport, calling it a strategic investment that strengthens links between the emirates, improves quality of life, provides sustainable mobility solutions and supports the competitiveness of the national economy.
According to Sheikh Nahyan, the project also reinforces the UAE's position as a global hub for trade, investment, tourism and logistics while reflecting the country's commitment to developing world-class infrastructure.
Sheikh Nahyan said the latest achievement reflects the forward-looking vision of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose leadership continues to place people at the centre of national development through investments in infrastructure, innovation and technology.
He noted that the passenger railway is a practical realisation of this vision, demonstrating the leadership's commitment to creating an advanced transport network that meets the highest international standards while strengthening the UAE's reputation as a global model for comprehensive development and innovation.
He added that the railway significantly enhances the country's transport system by offering a safe, fast and sustainable mode of travel connecting cities and major economic centres.
Beyond improving mobility, Sheikh Nahyan said the service is expected to stimulate commercial and tourism activity, deepen economic and social integration between the emirates, and contribute to national sustainability goals by reducing carbon emissions and supporting the UAE's transition towards a greener economy.
He also highlighted the country's ability to turn ambitious plans into reality within record timeframes through strong leadership, effective national institutions and close collaboration across sectors.
According to Sheikh Nahyan, the UAE remains committed to delivering strategic projects that strengthen future readiness and reinforce its standing among the world's most advanced and innovative nations.
Expansion plans
Sheikh Nahyan praised the work of Etihad Rail under the leadership of Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes' Affairs, for overseeing the delivery of the landmark national project.
He also commended the efforts of Etihad Rail's workforce, Emirati professionals and project partners, saying their contributions had resulted in a railway network built to the highest international standards.

The project, he said, showcases the capabilities of Emirati talent while setting a benchmark for railway infrastructure and sustainable transport.
The launch of passenger services comes less than five years after the initiative was announced as part of the UAE's "Projects of the 50". In that time, the scheme has evolved from a national vision into an operational railway connecting cities and economic centres while supporting continued investment in advanced infrastructure and long-term economic and social development.
Passenger demand has already been strong since ticket bookings opened, with Etihad Rail operating six daily services between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah during the introductory phase.
Travellers are offered guaranteed seating, complimentary wireless internet, charging ports for electronic devices at every seat and generous luggage space. Premium Class passengers also have access to enhanced services designed to provide greater comfort and a more luxurious travel experience.
Etihad Rail has already outlined plans to expand passenger operations later this year. Services to Dubai and Al Dhaid stations are scheduled to begin on 30 September 2026, followed by the opening of stations in the Al Dhafra region on 30 December 2026. The network will then be completed with the launch of Sharjah Station on 30 March 2027, further extending rail connectivity across the UAE while supporting sustainable transport and the country's long-term development ambitions.
