Team format tests depth, strategy and consistency under pressure
DUBAI – The ninth edition of the Vice President’s Jiu-Jitsu Cup began on Saturday at Shabab Al Ahli Club in Dubai, attracting large crowds and delivering a fast-paced start to the two-day championship.
Athletes from leading clubs and academies across the UAE competed in tightly contested preliminary rounds. The opening day set a high standard, with teams aiming to secure places in Sunday’s finals.
Competitors across the Under-14, Under-16, Under-18 and Adults divisions displayed sharp technique and tactical awareness, with bouts unfolding at a consistently high tempo. Each contest carried significant weight as teams sought to position themselves for the decisive final stage.
Finalists confirmed
Results from the first day saw several prominent clubs secure qualification for the final rounds. In the Adults division, Al Ain Club and Baniyas Club progressed to the championship stage. The Under-18 category featured Al Jazira Club and Al Ain Club advancing after strong performances.
In the Under-16 division, Palms Sports Academy, Baniyas Club, Al Ain Club and Sharjah Self-Defense Sports Club earned their places in the finals. Meanwhile, Al Ain Club and Palms Sports Academy confirmed qualification in the Under-14 category, setting up competitive matchups for the concluding day.
Team challenge
A defining feature of the championship is its team-based format, which distinguishes it from most domestic competitions. Rather than focusing solely on individual achievements, the structure emphasises collective performance across multiple categories. Teams must demonstrate depth, strategic planning and adaptability to succeed.
Mubarak Saleh Al Menhali, Technical Director of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, highlighted the importance of this format, noting that it pushes teams to manage athletes effectively across all divisions. He pointed to the narrow margins seen on the opening day, adding that intensity is expected to rise further in the finals, where decisive moments will shape outcomes.

Thani Majid bin Suleiman, Director of Combat Sports at Shabab Al Ahli Club, underscored the organisational effort behind hosting the event, stating that creating optimal conditions for athletes remained a priority. He emphasised the club’s focus on discipline and balanced performance across categories.
Cassiano Cunha, coach of Palms Sports Team 777, described his team’s display as controlled and efficient, particularly in managing bout tempo and capitalising on key opportunities. He noted that refinement in timing and decision-making would be crucial in the final rounds.
The championship concludes on Sunday, with titles to be decided across all divisions. Supporters and families are expected to fill the venue as teams compete for top honours in a charged atmosphere.
