German historian shares Pakistan memories at Abu Dhabi art event
Embassy programme attracts diplomats, scholars and community members in UAE capital
ABU DHABI – The Embassy of Pakistan in Abu Dhabi hosted a vibrant cultural evening featuring a talk by German historian and traveller Ursula Perlwitz, alongside an art exhibition of contemporary Pakistani artists.
Perlwitz, born in Hamburg in 1934, lived in Karachi between 1963 and 1968 during her husband’s posting with Lufthansa. A scholar of archaeology and languages, she has travelled widely across Europe, Africa and Asia.
The session was moderated by Dr Saba Karim Khan of New York University Abu Dhabi and attended by ambassadors, diplomats and members of the Pakistani community.
Memories of Pakistan
In her remarks, Perlwitz shared vivid memories of her years in Pakistan, recalling visits to Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, the northern areas and former East Pakistan.
She described her fascination with Mughal art, her collection of miniature paintings and travels to archaeological treasures such as Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. Reflecting warmly, she spoke of Pakistan’s hospitality, its cuisine, culture and strong women who left a lasting impression on her, adding that she hoped to return soon.
Ambassador Faisal Niaz Tirmizi thanked Perlwitz for her recollections and encouraged her to write a book on her experiences and collection of 1960s photographs.
Art exhibition
Following the talk, the Embassy inaugurated an exhibition showcasing works by Pakistani artist Tehseen Badar, whose portfolio spans figurative and cultural themes, calligraphy, landscapes and portraits. Artworks by Saima Furqan and Dr Rabia Sheikh were also displayed.
The ambassador praised the featured artists, noting the Embassy’s efforts to promote Pakistani art and culture on international platforms. Guests remarked on the creativity and diversity reflected in the exhibition, which brought the evening to a colourful close.
