Watch: Dubai driver fined Dh50,000 after reckless driving video goes viral
Vehicle impounded after driver dangerously swerved across lanes on Al Ittihad Road
DUBAI Police have impounded a vehicle and fined its driver Dh50,000 after a video showing dangerous lane swerving on Al Ittihad Road went viral.
The footage captured the driver recklessly veering across lanes in the early hours of Friday, nearly causing several collisions.
The video, which quickly circulated on social media, was recorded by a witness near the Al Qiyadah tunnel heading towards Sharjah.
The car can be seen zigzagging at high speeds, narrowly missing other vehicles and almost striking the median barrier. The alarming driving prompted immediate police action.
What happened?
According to Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of Dubai Police’s General Department of Traffic, officers swiftly identified the vehicle and the driver involved. The car was seized on the same day the footage emerged. Multiple violations were recorded, including reckless driving, failure to stay in lane, and sudden swerving – offences that directly endangered public safety.
Witnesses initially assumed the driver was distracted, possibly using a mobile phone. However, the erratic movements quickly revealed a more serious case of reckless behaviour, with surrounding motorists visibly panicked as they attempted to avoid a crash.
How was it handled?
Authorities confirmed that the incident was dealt with under Decree No. 30 of 2023, which allows for immediate impoundment and a Dh50,000 penalty for the release of any vehicle involved in major traffic offences. The driver now faces further legal consequences.
Brigadier bin Suwaidan highlighted Dubai Police’s zero-tolerance policy and commended residents for helping authorities by reporting the violation. He urged the public to continue using the “Police Eye” feature on the Dubai Police app or call the 901 hotline to report similar cases.
Just last month, another young driver was arrested after a separate viral video showed him speeding dangerously along the hard shoulder.
That case also resulted in a Dh50,000 fine and vehicle impoundment, with police warning that such behaviour leads to fatal consequences in many cases.
Police statistics show that 80 percent of drivers who commit similar violations have been involved in serious or fatal accidents. Dubai authorities continue to urge motorists to drive responsibly and help maintain road safety across the emirate.
