Abu Dhabi to launch electric Seaglider transport by 2028
Initial routes will connect UAE capital city with Al Dhafra region
ABU DHABI – The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), and VERSA Advanced Maritime Services (VERSA) have signed a landmark agreement to introduce Seaglider operations across the emirate by 2028.
The collaboration aims to enhance coastal transportation and connectivity, offering residents and visitors a faster, environmentally friendly alternative for maritime travel.
The strategic partnership marks a commitment to streamline coastal mobility in Abu Dhabi using advanced, zero-emission solutions. Initial plans will focus on routes between Abu Dhabi City and the Al Dhafra Region, with gradual expansion across the emirate and beyond. The initiative is expected to boost tourism, infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks while supporting national innovation and sustainability objectives.
Seagliders
Seagliders are Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect vessels that operate just above the water surface. Fully electric and zero-emission, they offer high-speed travel and significantly reduced journey times. VERSA, the UAE’s first Seaglider operator, has been developing the project since 2022, with operations officially set to begin in 2028.

Strategic collaboration
The agreement covers feasibility studies and market analyses, examining operational, commercial, and environmental aspects of Seaglider deployment. Partners will also explore operational models, including routes and schedules, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s broader tourism strategy and infrastructure plans.
Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), said: “This agreement marks an important step in extending smart and sustainable mobility across land, air, and sea. Together with our partners, we are laying the foundations for innovative, low-emission services that enhance connectivity while reducing the environmental footprint of marine transport.”
