Biometric technology delivers faster, paperless immigration at city airports
DUBAI – Dubai's ambition to make airport travel almost effortless is rapidly becoming a reality.
More than 9.4 million travellers passed through the emirate's AI-powered Smart Travel ecosystem during the first half of 2026, highlighting how digital border technologies are reshaping the passenger experience.
With biometric verification replacing conventional document checks, eligible travellers are now completing immigration procedures in just a matter of seconds.
Smart travel
According to the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai, a total of 9,464,057 travellers used the integrated Smart Travel ecosystem between January and June 2026.

The overwhelming majority, 9,024,736 passengers, completed immigration clearance through Smart Gates, reinforcing their role as the backbone of Dubai's border operations. Another 439,321 travellers used the advanced Travel Without Borders – Red Carpet service, designed to provide an almost invisible immigration experience.
Unlike conventional immigration counters, the Red Carpet service allows eligible passengers arriving in or departing from Dubai to complete border formalities simply by walking through a dedicated lane. There is no need to present a passport or other travel documents, and no interaction with immigration officers is required.
Faster processing
The Red Carpet service combines artificial intelligence with advanced biometric recognition to dramatically reduce processing times.
GDRFA Dubai said the system has cut the average border clearance time from 12.5 seconds to just 3.4 seconds, representing a 60 percent reduction compared with previous procedures. At the same time, the intelligent system can process up to 10 travellers simultaneously, allowing multiple passengers to complete immigration at once.
The service also removes paper documentation and physical touchpoints entirely for eligible travellers, creating a fully digital border-crossing experience while maintaining security standards.
Smart Gates continue to play an equally important role across Dubai airports. Using biometric verification, they enable eligible passengers to complete immigration procedures within seconds without traditional manual processing. Authorities say the integrated ecosystem has increased airport capacity, improved operational efficiency and strengthened passenger flow while maintaining high levels of security and accuracy.
Easy access
To benefit from the Smart Travel ecosystem, GDRFA Dubai is encouraging eligible travellers to complete pre-registration before arriving at Dubai airports.
Passengers can check their registration status and eligibility through the Smart Gate Registration Inquiry service on the GDRFA Dubai website before travelling. Once registered, travellers can bypass conventional immigration procedures by simply standing at the Smart Gate and looking towards the green light, allowing secure border clearance within seconds.
Officials say the pre-registration process helps ensure passengers enjoy uninterrupted access to both Smart Gates and the Red Carpet service from the moment they arrive at the airport.

Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, said the achievements reflect the UAE and Dubai's vision of using innovation and artificial intelligence to deliver world-class government services.
