Increase in air traffic routes to provide more travel options for passengers from GCC.
Dubai: The skies over the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are buzzing with new activity as major international carriers partner with regional giants to expand their long-haul networks.
This surge in flight routes, starting in June, is expected to further solidify the UAE and broader GCC region as a global aviation powerhouse.
A major surge in connectivity
According to an Aviation Week report, over 50 new routes will be launched across the UAE, GCC, and international airlines this month, just in time for the ultra-busy summer travel period. This increase in air traffic will not only provide more travel options for passengers but also contribute to the UAE’s positioning as a central hub for global air travel.
Key launches from UAE airlines
- Several UAE-based airlines are unveiling new routes this month, marking an exciting period of growth for the country’s aviation industry:
- Air Arabia Abu Dhabi will now operate three weekly flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan, using the Airbus A320.
- Emirates has expanded its global reach with four weekly flights to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, using the Boeing 777-300ER.
- Etihad Airways launched operations to Warsaw Chopin Airport, operating four times a week, beginning June 3.
- flydubai kicked off daily flights to Antalya, Turkey, on June 5.
- Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will begin operating three weekly flights to a variety of new destinations starting June 4.
These new routes provide UAE travellers with more opportunities to explore destinations across Asia, Europe, and beyond.
Regional airline growth
The GCC region also records several key international carriers expand their routes, creating fresh connections between the Middle East and the world:
Virgin Australia, in partnership with Qatar Airways, is launching daily flights from Sydney to Doha, Qatar, starting June 12, with additional flights from Brisbane and Perth later in the month.
- Saudi airline will begin twice-weekly flights between Jeddah and Venice, Italy, on June 13.
- Royal Air Maroc is introducing a new three-weekly service from Casablanca to London Stansted, starting June 24.
- Kuwait’s Jazeera Airways will operate flights to Sochi, Russia, beginning June 26.
- Gulf Air has commenced five weekly flights from Bahrain to Nairobi, Kenya.
- flyadeal, the budget airline, is adding flights from Riyadh to Salalah, Oman, starting June 19.
These routes reflect the region’s growing role in connecting passengers to popular international destinations.
New flights to India
Flights to the Indian subcontinent from the GCC are also on the rise. Ethiopian Airlines will begin three weekly flights from Addis Ababa to Hyderabad, India, starting June 16, providing more travel options for passengers connecting through the Gulf.
Meanwhile, Royal Jordanian will resume its operations to India with a new four-times-weekly service between Amman and Mumbai, launching June 19.
Global airline expansions
Beyond the Gulf, June sees significant expansions by some of the world’s top carriers:
United Airlines will launch its first-ever nonstop flights to Nuuk, Greenland, with twice-weekly services from Newark Liberty International Airport starting June 5.
Delta Air Lines will re-enter the transpacific market with daily nonstop flights from Salt Lake City to Seoul Incheon starting June 12.
Taiwan's Starlux Airlines is adding a new four-times-weekly route from Taiwan to Ontario International Airport in Southern California, catering to the large Taiwanese population in the Los Angeles area.
