UAE teen makes history with Mount Elbrus ascent
Fatima Al Awadhi becomes youngest Emirati to conquer Europe’s highest peak
DUBAI: In a defining achievement for the UAE, 17-year-old Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi has become the youngest Emirati to scale Mount Elbrus, the tallest peak in Europe at 5,642 metres.
Her successful summit marks a key milestone in the global “Seven Summits” challenge and reflects a growing wave of Emirati youth pushing boundaries on the world stage.
This latest feat follows her 2023 ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Fatima’s mission, she says, is not just about personal glory – it’s about motivating a generation. “Emirati and Arab youth, especially young women, are capable of leading, exploring and making a meaningful impact,” she said.
Historic ascent
Al Awadhi’s climb was supported by UAE-based Finance House, a firm known for its focus on youth empowerment and social responsibility. Battling extreme temperatures and high-altitude conditions, she raised the UAE flag atop Mount Elbrus, calling it a message of hope and determination for young Arabs across the region.
Her achievement was dedicated to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, “Mother of the Nation”, for their unwavering support towards empowering Emirati youth and women.
Inspired mission
Blending her passion for mountaineering with a sense of duty, Al Awadhi plans to launch a series of environmental and humanitarian initiatives to support underprivileged communities and promote sustainability. The young climber draws strength from her family, especially her late father Abdulrahman Al Awadhi and mother Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, whom she described as her “anchor and strength”.
With two summits down, Fatima’s journey toward conquering the Seven Summits continues – elevating not just her own dreams, but the aspirations of a nation.
