Dubai sets mandatory marine traffic plan for New Year’s Eve 2026
Mandatory one-way routes designed to prevent congestion on waterways
DUBAI – The Dubai Maritime Authority at the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation has announced a mandatory marine traffic management plan for New Year’s Eve 2026, to be enforced during peak hours from 10pm on 31 December 2025 to 2am on 1 January 2026.
The initiative aims to ensure high levels of safety and coordination across Dubai’s waterways as crowds gather to watch fireworks displays over the sea.
The Authority has issued a full guide containing maps, timings and navigational instructions to support vessel owners and operators.
NYE traffic plan
Sheikh Dr Saeed bin Ahmed Al Maktoum, Executive Director of the Dubai Maritime Authority, said the Authority is committed to applying an integrated plan for managing marine traffic during periods of heightened activity, particularly at the end and beginning of the new year. He urged vessel owners, agents, marinas and yacht clubs to brief crews and passengers early, follow designated routes and maintain safe distances when navigating.
The plan is built around a one-way traffic system, scheduled departure and return timings based on vessel size, and special arrangements tailored to each marina. The system is designed to minimise congestion at sea, reduce collision risks and maintain smooth movement in major areas such as Dubai Marina, Dubai Harbour Marina, Palm Jumeirah’s east and west marinas, and the Dubai Water Canal entrances.
Safety measures
The Authority highlighted the need for all marine vessels to comply with the issued instructions and plan journeys according to designated routes, weather forecasts and operational capabilities. Navigational safety and strict adherence to collision-prevention regulations remain key priorities.
Sheikh Dr Saeed noted that monitoring teams will be stationed at critical points in cooperation with strategic partners to ensure full compliance. Vessel movements will also be monitored using AIS tracking systems, cameras and maritime patrols. Violators face penalties under the executive regulations governing vessel licensing in Dubai, which may include suspension of vessel licences, captains or crew members.
Zero-incident record
According to the Authority, no marine accidents have been recorded in previous years during New Year’s Eve celebrations, maintaining a 0% incident rate. It aims to preserve this record through enhanced coordination and readiness, reflecting Dubai’s capability in organising large-scale public events.
The Authority stated that these measures are intended to safeguard sea-goers, support the smooth flow of marine activity and ensure an enjoyable experience for residents and visitors.
