World Taekwondo Cadet Championships 2025 opens in Fujairah with record participation
Global youth event draws 811 athletes from 93 countries
FUJAIRAH: The World Taekwondo Cadet Championships 2025 has commenced at the Zayed Sports Complex, under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah,
This marks the seventh edition of the championship, which is considered one of the premier global events for young taekwondo athletes.
In the opening ceremony held over the weekend, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi emphasised that Fujairah’s ability to attract such major international competitions reflects the confidence of the global sporting community in the Emirate. He highlighted Fujairah’s advanced infrastructure and skilled organisational teams, which play a key role in successfully delivering high-profile sports events.
The Crown Prince also credited the unwavering support of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, as pivotal in elevating Fujairah’s sports sector. He noted that the development of sports is a strategic pillar in strengthening the Emirate’s international reputation. His Highness Sheikh Dr Rashid bin Hamad Al Sharqi was also present at the opening, underscoring the event’s national significance.
World Taekwondo Cadet Championships 2025
The 2025 edition of the championships is notable for its scale, welcoming 811 athletes – both male and female – from 93 countries. This marks the largest turnout in the history of the World Taekwondo Cadet Championships. Participants will compete over five days, from 10th to 14th May, transforming Fujairah into a vibrant global sports arena.
Speaking at the event, Dr Ahmed Hamdan Al Zeyoudi, Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee, President of the UAE Taekwondo Federation, and member of World Taekwondo, highlighted the leadership vision behind this achievement. “This championship is driven by the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, and the visionary guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi. Hosting such a monumental event underscores Fujairah’s international standing in sports,” he said.
He extended gratitude to World Taekwondo, the Ministry of Sports, and various national and local partners for their collaborative efforts. The main sponsors, e& and Fujairah Investment Company, along with institutional support from the Fujairah Police General Headquarters, were also acknowledged.
Global recognition
World Taekwondo President, Dr Choue Chung-won, noted that this year’s championship is a landmark moment. “It is the largest cadet event ever held, highlighting the emphasis that Member National Associations place on developing young talent,” he stated.
Dr Choue expressed appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi for supporting World Taekwondo’s humanitarian efforts. He highlighted the Crown Prince’s contributions to refugee causes, which have enabled the inclusion of a refugee team in this year’s competition.
“The cadet athletes competing here today are the future Olympians and world champions,” Dr Choue added, stressing the importance of grassroots development in taekwondo.
Opening ceremony
The opening ceremony was a vivid blend of tradition and athletic spirit. It featured the ceremonial oath-taking by athletes, referees, and coaches, followed by a flag parade representing all 93 participating nations. Cultural performances highlighting Emirati heritage added a local flavour to the international event.
A standout moment was the performance by the World Taekwondo demonstration team, captivating the audience with high-energy routines and precision skills.
The ceremony was attended by senior dignitaries, including Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports; Abdulla Ebrahim Al Ahmed from e&; Mohammed Saeed Al Dhanhani of the Fujairah Investment Company; Major General Mohammed Ahmed bin Ghanim Al Kaabi, Commander-in-Chief of Fujairah Police; and Nader Abu Shawish, Event Director. Representatives from global and regional taekwondo federations were also present in full support.
