#Freedom250: US marks Independence Day in Dubai with fireworks and year-long plans
Year-long nationwide events planned across all seven emirates
DUBAI – A major fireworks display lit up the Dubai skyline as American expatriates and diplomats launched early celebrations marking 250 years of independence of the United States.
The event brought together senior officials, business leaders and community members for a large-scale patriotic gathering that highlighted the growing ties between Washington and Abu Dhabi. More than 1,000 guests attended the ceremony at Dubai Festival City, where organisers also outlined plans for year-long activities across the Emirates.
The celebration was hosted by the US diplomatic mission in Dubai and the Northern Emirates and focused on both the historic milestone and the expanding bilateral partnership with the United Arab Emirates.
Early July 4 tribute
According to organisers, US missions in the UAE traditionally hold Independence Day events earlier in the year due to the extreme summer heat in July and seasonal travel by many American citizens. Independence Day marks July 4, 1776, when the declaration of independence was adopted.
This year’s early celebration was timed with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and just ahead of the US federal holiday honouring George Washington, observed on the third Monday of February.
Officials announced that the 250th anniversary, branded as Freedom 250, will be marked through programmes and community events throughout the year across all seven emirates.
Freedom 250 ceremony
The formal proceedings opened with the UAE national anthem performed by the Dubai Police Band, followed by the US national anthem. A ceremonial “marching on and marching off the colours” presentation was conducted by US Marine Corps Security Guards, honouring the American flag and the Marine Corps battle colours.
The venue featured American-themed décor in red, white and blue, along with themed installations and photo areas for guests. Food stations served a range of US favourites including chicken fingers, brisket, pastries, desserts and lemonade, alongside dishes from well-known American brands.
Organisers said the Freedom 250 calendar will continue with additional public and community-focused events across the Emirates, aimed at engaging both American residents and local partners in the anniversary year.
UAE-US ties
Eric Gaudiosi, Charge d’Affaires at the US Embassy to the UAE, told attendees that the relationship between the two countries is built on long-term cooperation and measurable outcomes across several sectors. He said bilateral engagement spans security, trade, investment, energy, arts, education and high technology, describing the partnership as strategic rather than symbolic.,
He also pointed to a recent high-level visit by Donald Trump, noting that the UAE was included in his first overseas trip during his second term, calling it a strong signal of the importance Washington places on the relationship.
Robert Raines, US Consul General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, said the anniversary year reflects both historical legacy and forward-looking partnerships. He credited American and Emirati companies and institutions for supporting bilateral cooperation and strengthening commercial and cultural links.
The chief guest at the event was UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, who attended alongside diplomats, executives and community representatives.
