Air India announces partial resumption of international flights following Ahmedabad crash
Several routes remain reduced or suspended until end of September
DUBAI: Air India has announced the gradual restoration of its international flight network following a self-imposed ‘Safety Pause’ in the aftermath of the tragic crash of flight AI171 on June 12.
The airline paused several services to conduct comprehensive safety inspections on its Boeing 787 aircraft and account for extended flight times caused by airspace closures over Pakistan and parts of the Middle East.
The phased recovery begins August 1, 2025, with a full return to scheduled international operations expected by October 1. The airline’s current restructuring includes reinstated services, new routes, frequency reductions, and temporary suspensions across Asia, Europe, North America, Africa, and Australia.
New routes, frequency boosts
Among the notable changes, Air India will introduce a new Ahmedabad–London Heathrow service, operating thrice weekly from August 1 to September 30. This replaces the previous five weekly flights on the Ahmedabad–London Gatwick route.

From July 16, the Delhi–London Heathrow route will be increased to 24 flights weekly. Delhi–Zurich will see a rise from four to five weekly services from August 1, while Delhi–Tokyo (Haneda) resumes daily operations beginning the same day. Full five-times-weekly flights will also return on the Delhi–Seoul (Incheon) route from September 1.
Routes still trimmed
However, several international routes will continue with reduced frequencies through September. In Europe, Delhi–Paris drops from 12 to 7 weekly flights from August 1, while services to Milan, Vienna, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam will also operate at lower frequencies.
In North America, flights from Delhi to Washington, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver, and both New York airports remain reduced. Notably, Delhi–New York (JFK) and Mumbai–New York (JFK) each drop from seven to six weekly flights from July 16 and August 1, respectively.
Delhi–Melbourne and Delhi–Sydney routes are reduced from seven to five weekly flights, and Delhi–Nairobi, reinstated temporarily, will be suspended for the month of September.
Suspended until September 30
Certain routes will remain completely suspended until the end of September. These include Amritsar–London Gatwick, Goa (Mopa)–London Gatwick, Bengaluru–Singapore, and Pune–Singapore.
Passengers affected by suspensions or frequency changes will be contacted directly by Air India for rebooking alternatives or refunds.
525+ flights weekly
Despite temporary reductions and suspensions, Air India confirmed it would be operating more than 525 international flights weekly across 63 global routes by October. The airline thanked customers for their understanding and highlighted that the safety pause was a necessary measure to ensure passenger safety and operational reliability.
