ABU DHABI – The Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi has launched a unique initiative allowing citizens and residents to enter its terminals without the need for a flight or boarding pass.

The eight-week programme opens up parts of the airport that are usually restricted to travelling passengers, giving visitors access to retail stores, dining venues and leisure spaces inside the terminal environment.

The experience is designed to showcase the airport’s facilities in a controlled, structured manner, while offering a rare opportunity to explore one of the UAE’s major aviation hubs from within. Entry is strictly regulated through advance registration and identity verification.

Entry guide

Access is limited to UAE ID holders, including both citizens and residents. To participate, visitors must complete an online registration process to obtain a digital security pass issued in PDF format with a QR code. This pass is mandatory for entry and must be presented at all checkpoints during the visit.

Minors under 18 years old are allowed only when accompanied by an adult.

All visits must be booked in advance, while any same-day changes require direct coordination with airport authorities and the issuance of a new pass.

Security rules

The digital pass is scanned at multiple points, including entry gates, retail outlets and exit areas, ensuring controlled movement throughout the airport. Visitors are required to return their security badge when leaving the premises, with officials warning that failure to do so may affect eligibility for future visits.

As part of the security protocol, personal electronic devices such as laptops and tablets are not permitted inside the airport during the experience. These measures are in place to maintain a secure and organised environment for all participants.

Perks for visitors

The initiative includes up to four hours of free parking for visitors who spend a minimum of Dh200 within the airport. A validation voucher must be collected before departure to qualify for the benefit. All transactions inside the airport are cashless, requiring bank cards for payment. While retail and dining outlets remain fully accessible, standard VAT charges apply to purchases.

Tobacco and alcohol sales are not permitted under this programme, as access is granted without a boarding pass, maintaining the visitor-focused nature of the experience throughout the eight-week campaign.
