Zayed National Museum earns place on TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2026 list
Only a handful of Middle East sites featured this year
ABU DHABI – The Zayed National Museum has been named in TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2026, securing a spot among 100 exceptional destinations worldwide.
The annual list highlights locations offering remarkable travel and cultural experiences, selected through nominations by the publication’s international network of correspondents and contributors.
The recognition places the Abu Dhabi landmark among a limited number of sites from the region, including just two destinations in the Middle East category and three across the wider MENA region for 2026.
A cultural hub
Located within the Saadiyat Cultural District, the museum forms part of one of the world’s densest clusters of cultural institutions. It officially opened its doors on 3 December 2025, marking a significant addition to the UAE’s cultural landscape.
The museum charts 300,000 years of human history in the region, while honouring the life and legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Its galleries explore themes of heritage, identity and progress through a combination of permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Rare artefacts
Among its highlights are nationally significant pieces such as the Abu Dhabi Pearl, regarded as one of the world’s oldest natural pearls, and the Blue Qur’an, widely considered one of the most important works in Islamic art.
A full-scale reconstruction of an ancient Magan Boat also features prominently, developed through collaboration with Zayed University and New York University Abu Dhabi.
Iconic design
The building itself, designed by Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, draws inspiration from the wings of a falcon in flight, reflecting Emirati heritage and symbolism.
