Arshdeep Singh first Indian to reach 100 T20I wickets
ABU DHABI – India defeated Oman by 21 runs in their final Group A fixture of the Asia Cup 2025 at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, on Friday.
Batting first after winning the toss, India put up 188 for 8 in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson, promoted to number three, played a vital knock of 56 from 45 balls, holding the innings together. Abhishek Sharma once again provided fireworks at the top, hammering 38 off just 15 deliveries to set the tone in the powerplay.
The Indian middle order, which had been short on time in the middle, finally got valuable match practice ahead of the Super Four stage. Contributions from Shivam Dube and Tilak Varma ensured the side reached a challenging total.
Oman’s spirited chase
Oman responded with determination in their pursuit of 189. Aamir Kaleem led the charge with a fluent 64 off 46 balls, including seven boundaries and two sixes, while Hammad Mirza supported him with a half-century. At 131 for 1 after 16 overs, Oman appeared to be in with a real chance of pulling off an upset.
However, India’s bowlers struck at crucial intervals. The final four overs saw Oman lose momentum and wickets in quick succession, ending their innings at 167 for 6. Despite the defeat, Oman’s fightback earned them plaudits, particularly given their struggles earlier in the tournament.

Milestones
The match also saw a significant personal milestone. Arshdeep Singh became the first Indian bowler to take 100 wickets in men’s T20 Internationals, reaching the landmark with the dismissal of Vinayak Shukla. India rotated their squad, resting Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy, while giving opportunities to Arshdeep and Harshit Rana.
India’s unbeaten run in the group stage – victories over the UAE, Pakistan, and now Oman – cements their position as strong contenders in the tournament. Oman, who lost all three of their matches, exit the competition but will shift focus to the upcoming T20 World Cup Asia & East-Asia-Pacific Regional Qualifier, which they are set to host.
