Pakistan backs Trump for Nobel Peace Prize after India conflict mediation
Islamabad credits POTUS for helping avert war between nuclear-armed neighbours
DUBAI: Pakistan has formally announced plans to nominate former US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with a key role in defusing the recent military crisis with India.
The surprise development, revealed via a government post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, highlights Trump’s “decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership” in the wake of a deadly flare-up in Kashmir.

A terror attack in April reignited long-standing hostilities between India and Pakistan. New Delhi blamed Islamabad, which denied involvement. What followed were four tense days of military skirmishes between the nuclear-armed neighbours, heightening fears of a wider conflict.
In May, Trump announced a ceasefire between the two countries, a move that reportedly surprised Indian officials. According to Islamabad, the intervention prevented a full-scale war, while New Delhi insists the de-escalation was achieved through bilateral military talks without outside mediation.
Diplomatic praise
A separate statement from Pakistan’s embassy in Washington praised Trump’s “robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi,” saying it helped secure a ceasefire and restored stability in the region. Islamabad also pointed to his consistent willingness to mediate on Kashmir and called him a “genuine peacemaker.”
Trump recently met Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, for a rare lunch at the White House – the first such invite extended to a Pakistani military leader during a civilian government’s term in Islamabad.
Pakistan’s official statement further claimed India’s actions amounted to “unprovoked and unlawful aggression,” adding that its own response, dubbed Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, was a “measured and precise military” defence aimed at avoiding civilian harm.
The post also acknowledged Trump's earlier efforts in conflict zones including the Abraham Accords between Israel and Arab nations, tensions between Egypt and Ethiopia, and a peace agreement between Serbia and Kosovo.
Trump himself has long complained about being overlooked by the Nobel Committee, pointing to what he describes as multiple peacekeeping achievements during his presidency. “I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do,” he wrote in a recent Truth Social post.
He added that his interventions prevented nuclear war between India and Pakistan, among others. Yet despite these assertions, the former president’s critics remain sceptical, especially amid ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine.
