Abu Dhabi unveils UAE's first dual-certified game design degree
Scholarships to support 140 students over the next six years
ABU DHABI: The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), Abu Dhabi University (ADU), and France-based digital arts institution Rubika have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch the region’s first dual-certified Bachelor of Arts in Video Game Design.
The new programme will begin in the upcoming academic year, marking a significant development in the emirate’s creative industries landscape.
This tripartite agreement aims to establish Abu Dhabi as a regional hub for video game education by integrating international expertise, local academic delivery, and real-world industry exposure. The partnership underscores DCT Abu Dhabi’s commitment to fostering innovation, empowering youth, and expanding the culture and creative industries sector in the UAE capital.
Industry integration
Through Abu Dhabi Gaming, DCT Abu Dhabi will ensure hands-on exposure for students by offering structured internships, mentorship programmes, and direct links to local game studios. To support access and participation, the department will fund up to 140 scholarships across six years.
Saeed Ali Al Fazari, Director of Strategic Affairs at DCT Abu Dhabi, stated, “This agreement aligns with our priorities to elevate creative industries and enable youth. By providing world-class education and practical experience, we are helping to build a highly qualified talent pool, ready to thrive globally, right from Abu Dhabi.”
Global collaboration
Rubika, an internationally recognised French institute specialising in video game design, animation, and digital arts, will lead the curriculum development and faculty training. The partnership will also allow students to access international exchange opportunities with Rubika’s global campuses, incorporating best practices and cross-cultural learning.
Dr. Stephane Andre, CEO of Rubika, commented, “This partnership with ADU and DCT Abu Dhabi represents a tremendous opportunity for Rubika. Our goal is to expand into culturally rich regions where students can use their heritage to create globally impactful content in games and animation.”
Academic innovation
Abu Dhabi University will serve as the host campus for the programme, ensuring its alignment with national accreditation standards. The degree will combine theoretical foundations with practical application, equipping students with skills that meet current and emerging market demands.
Prof. Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University, remarked, “This initiative supports the UAE’s innovation strategy. By launching the first dual-certified game design degree in the region, we’re preparing students for global careers in a rapidly evolving industry.”
