Dubai completes major Oud Maitha Road project with 14km of new roads and four bridges
Major intersections upgraded to improve links across key corridors
DUBAI – Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed all works on the Oud Maitha Road and Al Asayel Street Development Project, a major infrastructure scheme designed to strengthen connections between key traffic corridors and improve access to residential, development and service areas.
The project includes upgrades at four major intersections, four bridges and two tunnels, with the bridges and tunnels spanning 4,300 metres in total. It also delivered 14 kilometres of roads across the project area.
The completed works are designed to improve traffic flow, increase road capacity and reduce journey times along important routes in Dubai. The project serves areas including Za’abeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Maitha and Umm Hurair, alongside key facilities such as Latifa Hospital and Al Wasl Club. The population of the areas benefiting from the development is expected to exceed 420,000 by 2030.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said the completion of the project forms part of an integrated plan to develop Dubai’s road and transport infrastructure in line with comprehensive urban development and anticipated population and traffic growth.
The project, he said, supports smoother movement across the road network while improving access to destinations and contributing to the quality of mobility for residents and visitors.
Network links
The development strengthens connections between Oud Maitha Road, Al Asayel Street and several surrounding corridors, while upgrading the efficiency of intersections that handle significant traffic volumes.
A major improvement was delivered at the intersection of Oud Maitha Road and Sheikh Rashid Road, where an additional lane was added to the left-turn ramp carrying traffic from Oud Maitha Road towards Al Garhoud Bridge. The upgrade increases the ramp’s capacity to 1,800 vehicles per hour.
The service road on Sheikh Rashid Road, between the existing bridge and the Al Zahrawi Street exit, was also upgraded to address traffic overlaps and improve road safety. Meanwhile, the number of right-turn lanes carrying traffic from Sheikh Rashid Road onto Oud Maitha Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road increased from two to three lanes, lifting capacity to 4,000 vehicles per hour.
A tunnel was constructed to connect the service road on Oud Maitha Road with the Sheikh Rashid Road intersection, providing a dedicated route for traffic heading towards Bur Dubai.
One of the project’s key outcomes is the increase in Oud Maitha Street’s capacity from 10,400 to 15,600 vehicles per hour in both directions. That represents an increase of up to 50%. Journey time along the route has also been reduced from 20 minutes to five minutes, equivalent to a 75% reduction.
Bridges added
The intersection of Oud Maitha Road with Al Asayel Street and Al Wasl Club Street was upgraded through a series of bridge works designed to improve movement between Al Asayel Street, Al Khail Road and Al Wasl Club Street.
Two bridges were constructed to link Al Asayel Street with Al Khail Road via Al Wasl Club Street. The first is a two-lane bridge with a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour, carrying traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Wasl Club Street.
The second bridge has three lanes and can accommodate up to 3,600 vehicles per hour, serving traffic travelling from Al Khail Road towards Al Asayel Street.
A separate two-lane bridge was also constructed to serve left-turn traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Oud Maitha Road. It has a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour.
The works at the same location included improvements to the access road serving Al Wasl Club, as well as its entry and exit points on Al Wasl Club Street. These changes were designed to resolve traffic overlaps between the club’s access points and the main road network.
The intersection of Al Wasl Club Street and Al Khail Road also underwent major improvements. A two-lane bridge with a capacity of 3,000 vehicles per hour was constructed to serve traffic travelling from Al Asayel Street towards Al Khail Road in the direction of Business Bay Crossing.
Al Wasl Club Street was expanded at its exit towards Al Khail Road, which was increased to two lanes. The project also included service roads in both directions and additional parking spaces.
Tunnel upgrades
Further improvements were delivered at the intersection of Za’abeel Palace Street with Al Khail Road and Oud Maitha Road. An additional lane was added to the left-turn ramp carrying traffic from Al Khail Road towards Dubai–Al Ain Road, increasing its capacity from 900 to 1,800 vehicles per hour.
A single-lane tunnel was constructed at the same intersection, with a capacity of 1,200 vehicles per hour. It provides a route for traffic travelling from Dubai–Al Ain Road towards the service road on Oud Maitha Road and is designed to eliminate existing traffic overlaps.
The project also increased the number of lanes on the bridge carrying traffic from Al Khail Road towards Oud Maitha Road from two to three. As a result, its capacity increased from 2,200 to 3,300 vehicles per hour.
