Initiative enhances travel comfort for People of Determination
DUBAI – Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has introduced a new initiative aimed at improving accessibility and comfort for People of Determination, with the launch of sensory rooms at Al Satwa Bus Station and Oud Maitha Bus Station.
The project is designed particularly to support children with autism, offering dedicated spaces that cater to their sensory needs within public transport facilities. The move forms part of broader efforts to elevate customer happiness and deliver inclusive services across Dubai’s transport network.
The initiative aligns with long-term strategic objectives focused on enhancing user experience and strengthening the authority’s reputation as a provider of innovative, customer-centric solutions. By transforming existing infrastructure into value-added service points, RTA aims to maximise the utility of its facilities while ensuring that accessibility remains at the forefront of urban mobility planning.
Inclusive design
The sensory rooms have been carefully designed to create a balanced environment that combines relaxation with controlled stimulation. Each space incorporates smart low-level lighting to establish a calming atmosphere, alongside interactive elements such as swings that provide physical comfort and engagement. These features are tailored to help children regulate sensory input in what can often be overwhelming public environments.
In addition, the rooms are equipped with audio-visual systems that display soothing natural scenes, gentle music, and colourful visuals. These elements work together to reduce sensory stress and support emotional well-being, allowing children and their families to navigate travel with greater ease. The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of inclusive design in public infrastructure.
Recognition
The project has received formal recognition from the Dubai Autism Center, which awarded RTA the Autism-Friendly Environment Certificate. This certification confirms that the sensory rooms meet the standards set under the Autism-Friendly Programme, highlighting the authority’s adherence to best practices in accessibility and inclusion.
