All applicants must now complete the online form before booking appointments
DUBAI: Travellers residing in the UAE who require a Schengen visa for Europe must now complete an online visa application form directly on VFS Global’s booking portal before they can schedule an appointment.
Previously, applicants could reserve a slot and submit their form later. However, since 18 June 2025, that separate step has been removed.
This change is part of VFS Global's initiative, the official visa service provider for Schengen states in the UAE, aiming to streamline operations and boost accuracy. The integrated system ensures personal details, travel plans, and biometric preferences are finalised early on, reducing delays and errors. Applicants must fill in the form when creating their appointment, and only then can they proceed to select a date and time.
Who’s affected
Expatriates living in the UAE are primarily impacted, as Emirati passport holders continue to enjoy visa‑free access for short stays of up to 90 days in the Schengen area. Non‑Emirati residents – those visiting for tourism, work, medical treatment or family visits – must now follow the new online-first procedure.
Country specifics
While the appointment must be booked via VFS Global’s portal, final application submission may still occur through individual embassy websites. For example, Germany handles applications within up to 15 days of processing. Meanwhile, Denmark’s mission has warned travellers to apply no fewer than 15 days before departure, noting processing can extend to 45 days.
Fee essentials
Schengen visa fees remain €90 (Dh365) for adults, with reduced rates for children aged 6–11, and no charge for under‑6s. In addition, VFS charges a separate service fee – approximately Dh38 (EUR 9) – which should be paid alongside the visa cost.
What travellers should do
Applicants are urged to:
- Create an account on the VFS portal
- Complete the form fully before selecting an appointment
- Gather required documents: passport (valid 3 months beyond departure), UAE residence visa (valid 6 months), travel insurance (€30,000 minimum), flight itinerary, accommodation proof and a recent biometric photograph
- Apply 6 months before travel is permitted, but 15–45 days prior is recommended to account for processing variances
The online-first model reflects a broader push by the EU toward digitalising visa processes, with a single online Schengen platform expected in 2026.
