Dubai’s Emirates airline tops JFK Fly Quiet Programme with Gold Tier recognition
Noise abatement strategy blends technology, procedures and community collaboration
DUBAI – Dubai-based Emirates has been awarded the prestigious Gold Tier recognition in New York JFK Airport’s 2024 Fly Quiet Programme, becoming the only airline to achieve this distinction.
The carrier scored 92.9, significantly outperforming all other participating airlines, a clear reflection of its sustained commitment to quieter flying. The accolade underscores Emirates’ long-standing focus on operational efficiency, fleet modernisation, and community engagement.
The Fly Quiet Programme, developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is a voluntary initiative encouraging airlines to minimise noise through the use of quieter aircraft, adherence to noise abatement procedures, and utilisation of preferential runway operations. The programme measures and rewards operational diligence in protecting communities around one of the world’s busiest airports.
Exceptional fleet performance
Emirates operates one of the quietest widebody fleets in the industry, with every aircraft meeting ICAO Chapter 4 or Chapter 14 noise standards. The airline’s fleet consistently registers a cumulative margin exceeding 12 EPNdB over ICAO Chapter 4 requirements. High-capacity operations allow the airline to carry 1.75 million passenger-kilometres per sector on average, optimising noise impact by reducing the number of departures and arrivals required for the same passenger load.
For instance, serving 500 daily passengers on a single A380 flight results in one arrival and one departure noise event, compared with multiple smaller aircraft flights that generate six arrivals and six departures for the same route. This efficiency directly reduces noise exposure in airport-adjacent communities.
