RTA’s dynamic message signs slash travel times by 20pc across Dubai roads
112 signs deployed across the city’s main road network
DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed that its Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) system is transforming mobility across the emirate, cutting journey times by up to 20% on major corridors.
The system provides real-time messages to drivers, alerting them about accidents, traffic congestion, and adverse weather conditions, while simultaneously enhancing overall road safety.
Smart traffic management
Currently, the RTA operates 112 electronic signs, strategically positioned across Dubai’s main roads and fully integrated with the iTraffic platform at the Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre.
The system uses field sensors, travel time monitoring, and weather stations to feed data into the AI-powered platform. Operators can then approve responses, or the system can automatically execute measures during emergencies such as fog, heavy rain, or major accidents.
Sequential alerts
Salah Al Marzouqi, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, explained that the DMS system generates sequential messages based on the location of an incident. “It creates consecutive alert zones – starting two kilometres before the incident, followed by a congestion zone, and finally a guidance zone further away with lighter traffic – to redirect vehicles and reduce secondary collisions,” he said.
The system serves as a critical communication channel for drivers. It broadcasts alerts about congestion, accidents, vehicle breakdowns, traffic diversions, and major events. A total of 22 signs are specifically dedicated to showing travel times to key destinations such as Dubai International Airport and Dubai Marina, providing round-the-clock information to help drivers make informed route choices.
Between January and June 2025, the DMS system displayed 17,819 messages. Accident-related alerts led the list with 12,283 notifications, followed by 1,038 warning messages, 984 congestion alerts, and 905 vehicle breakdown notifications. Additionally, 90 messages covered full road closures, while 2,519 addressed weather conditions, roadworks, and other operational updates.
