UAE to host first-ever All-Star Sumo Competition as elite rikishi arrive in Abu Dhabi
Nine elite wrestlers from three nations to compete this year
ABU DHABI – Abu Dhabi is set to welcome professional sumo to the UAE for the first time with the All-Star Sumo Competition at Space42 Arena on 26th September.
The event marks the country's first international professional sumo exhibition. Nine elite rikishi will contest 36 bouts, blending high-level sporting action with centuries-old ceremonial traditions.
The competition will bring together athletes from Japan, Mongolia and Egypt, featuring world champions, Emperor’s Cup winners and experienced professionals from the international sumo circuit.
Elite line-up
Leading the field is Japan’s Ichi, winner of the prestigious Emperor’s Cup, the highest honour in Japanese professional sumo. He will be joined by fellow Japanese wrestler Hiroki, one of the sport’s largest active competitors, and Egypt’s Ramy El-Gazar, an internationally decorated champion whose appearance is expected to strengthen the sport’s appeal across the region.
Mongolia’s Mendee, a junior World Sumo Champion and International Sumo Champion, also features in the line-up alongside additional professional rikishi from Japan and Mongolia.
Ancient tradition
Beyond the competition, spectators will witness the ceremonial traditions that define professional sumo, including the formal ring-entering procession and the pre-bout rituals performed before every contest.
The showcase is being coordinated with USA Sumo to ensure professional standards and an authentic presentation. Mohamad Yehya, General Manager of Space42 Arena, said experiencing sumo live offers audiences a deeper appreciation of the sport’s atmosphere, discipline and the respect that surrounds every bout.
