DUBAI – Marriott Bonvoy, the award-winning loyalty programme of Marriott International, has announced a partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline and a Star Alliance member, to expand benefits for travellers worldwide.

This collaboration allows members of both programmes to earn and redeem points and miles across flights and hotel stays, enhancing flexibility and travel convenience.

The partnership connects Ethiopian Airlines’ network of over 145 destinations with Marriott Bonvoy’s global portfolio of more than 30 hotel brands and 10,000 destinations. Starting immediately, eligible members of Marriott Bonvoy and Ethiopian Airlines’ ShebaMiles programme can convert miles to points, or vice versa, and earn rewards during hotel stays and flights.

Points and miles

Marriott Bonvoy members can convert points to ShebaMiles at a 3:1 ratio, receiving 5,000 bonus ShebaMiles for every 60,000 points transferred. Conversely, ShebaMiles members can convert their miles to Marriott Bonvoy points at a 2:1 ratio. Eligible stays at participating hotels also allow members to earn up to two miles per US dollar spent, or Marriott Bonvoy points as normal.

Members can also choose whether to earn Marriott Bonvoy points or ShebaMiles during hotel stays at participating properties. To access these benefits, members need only be enrolled in both loyalty programmes; no account linking is required.

Strategic partnership

Andrew Watson, Chief Commercial Officer – Europe, Middle East and Africa at Marriott International, highlighted the importance of Africa as a rapidly growing travel region. He noted that this partnership reflects the company’s commitment to delivering rewarding experiences, giving members the freedom to earn miles during stays or use points for flights.

Rahel Assefa, Ethiopian Airlines Group Vice President of Marketing, added that the collaboration is part of the airline’s ongoing efforts to enhance the ShebaMiles travel experience. Members now gain access to Marriott Bonvoy’s global network of hotels, offering more opportunities to earn and redeem miles across Africa and worldwide.

Global connectivity

Ethiopian Airlines offers extensive coverage across Africa and frequent connections to major global cities, including Mumbai, Paris, London, Washington D.C., and Beijing. As a Star Alliance member, the airline enables ShebaMiles members – and Marriott Bonvoy members who convert points – to access flight redemptions and cabin upgrades on 25 partner airlines serving more than 1,150 destinations.

Ethiopian Airlines, a nearly eight-decade-old success story, operates flights to over 160 passenger and cargo destinations across five continents, bridging Africa with the globe and setting benchmarks for airline service and innovation. The airline operates modern aircraft including the Boeing 737, 777, 787, Airbus A350-900, A350-1000, and De Havilland Q400. This focus on modern fleets underscores its commitment to passenger comfort and sustainability, while connecting the African continent with the rest of the world.
