Longer queues ahead as US waivers roll back
DUBAI – Travelling to the United States just became more challenging for UAE residents.
From September 2, 2025, most applicants for non-immigrant US visas will no longer be able to skip the interview stage, including children under 14 and adults over 79 who were previously exempt.
The update follows the US Department of State’s July 25 announcement, which rolls back the flexible pandemic-era waiver system.

What’s changing?
The United States is reinstating pre-pandemic screening rules for most applicants. Here’s what UAE travellers need to know:
- Mandatory interviews: Nearly all applicants must now appear in person at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate in Dubai.
- Children and elderly now included: Age exemptions are removed, meaning even young and senior applicants face interviews.
- Fewer waivers: B1/B2 business or tourist visa renewals will only qualify for interview waivers if all consulate conditions are met.
Who still qualifies?
A limited group can still skip interviews:
Diplomatic and official visas under A, G, and NATO categories.
Select B1/B2 renewals, if:
- Renewal is within 12 months of previous visa expiry
- Application is submitted in the applicant’s home country or country of residence
- No history of visa refusals or ineligibility
Consular officers retain discretion to call any applicant for an interview.
How to prepare
UAE residents should plan ahead for longer processing times:
- Secure appointments well in advance.
- Gather all required documents to satisfy interview requirements.
- Factor in potential delays if travelling during Christmas, New Year, or other busy periods.
When to apply
This change replaces the February 2025 waiver system and forms part of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”, aiming to restore standard pre-pandemic procedures. From 2026, an integrity fee of USD 250 will also apply to all applicants, affecting the total cost of travel.
