FIFA World Cup 2026 makes football history with 3.6 million fans
Historic milestone reached before knockout stage with thousands more matches ahead
NEW JERSEY – The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially become the best-attended tournament in the competition’s history after surpassing the previous attendance record set in 1994.
FIFA announced the milestone during Germany’s match against Ecuador in East Rutherford, New Jersey, when total attendance reached 3,605,357 spectators. The record was achieved before the completion of the group stage, with 48 matches still remaining in the tournament, leaving room for the final attendance figure to rise significantly.
The previous record was set at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, which attracted 3,587,538 fans across 52 matches. The 2026 edition moved beyond that mark with fewer matches completed, highlighting the scale of interest surrounding the expanded tournament.

The announcement was made during the second half of Germany’s clash with Ecuador, as giant stadium screens displayed the new all-time attendance figure to supporters inside the venue. Fans responded with applause as the tournament crossed the historic benchmark.
Stadiums hosting the 2026 World Cup have recorded an average occupancy rate of more than 99%, with large-capacity venues, particularly NFL stadiums across the United States, contributing to the record-breaking numbers.
The tournament is the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, expanding from the previous 32-team format. Matches are being played across 16 host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico, creating a wider footprint than any previous edition.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the achievement reflects the worldwide passion for football and the sport’s ability to unite supporters through moments of celebration and excitement. He highlighted the atmosphere created across host cities and stadiums throughout the tournament.
Earlier in the competition, FIFA also recorded a new single-day attendance milestone, with 281,223 fans attending matches on 16 June, surpassing the previous one-day World Cup attendance record from the 1994 tournament.
With the knockout stages still to come, the final attendance figure is expected to climb further as more supporters fill stadiums for the remaining fixtures.
