UK eVisa launch revolutionises travel as passports no longer held during applications
VFS Global supports UKVI with secure eVisa rollout worldwide
DUBAI – UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is taking a significant step in digital transformation with the rollout of eVisas, benefitting most UK visa customers from February 25, 2026.
This upgrade replaces traditional visa vignette stickers in passports, removing the need for customers to part with their passports while applications are processed. Travellers now only need a single visit to the Visa Application Centre to submit documents and confirm their identity, streamlining the entire process.
Over 10 million people are already using secure eVisas, which replace physical immigration status documents such as biometric residence permits (BRPs) and visa vignette stickers. UKVI has confirmed that eVisas will soon become the default proof of immigration status for most UK visa routes.
“The move to eVisas will significantly enhance the customer process for travellers, providing the ease and flexibility of retaining passports and allowing applications to other countries in the interim,” said Srinarayan Sankaran, Chief Operating Officer – Global Operations, VFS Global.

How does it work?
Applicants start by completing the online visa form on gov.uk and scheduling an appointment with VFS Global.
During their visit to the Visa Application Centre, they submit required documents and enrol biometrics. Once this is done, they leave the centre with their passport intact, and if the application is successful, instructions to access the eVisa are sent to the applicant’s registered email address.
This system enables global travel planning without interruption, as customers no longer have to wait for passports to be returned or rely on courier services to receive documents.
