Passenger caught with heroin hidden in 6,000 supplement capsules at Fujairah airport
Smart scanners helped officers detect narcotics in suspicious luggage
DUBAI: A major smuggling attempt was intercepted at Fujairah International Airport this month when an Asian traveller tried to bring heroin into the country concealed in a large shipment of dietary supplements.
The suspect arrived carrying 100 containers with 6,000 capsules and 70 separate bags of powdered supplement.
Smart detection used
Upon inspection, customs officers at the airport, working under the General Directorate of Ports at the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, flagged the suspicious luggage. Tests revealed that the capsules and powders contained heroin, a banned narcotic substance.
Authorities attributed the success of this operation to the high alertness of customs staff and the effective use of smart scanning devices. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the UAE’s borders and highlighted the importance of technology in detecting and preventing drug smuggling.
