Indian expat honoured for returning Dh100,000 found in Dubai parking lot
Cash returned to shipping company owner in just three hours
DUBAI – An Indian resident in Dubai has been honoured by Dubai Police after returning Dh100,000 he found in a parking lot, leading to the money being restored to its owner within just three hours.
Mohammed Ali Sherakal Mohi was recognised by officers at Al Raffa Police Station for what officials described as an act of honesty and integrity. The money had fallen from an envelope belonging to a private shipping company owner who was unaware that he had lost half of the cash he had withdrawn from a bank earlier that day.
Colonel Ahmed Obaid bin Hudaiba, Director of Al Raffa Police Station, honoured Mohi alongside Deputy Director Colonel Saleh Hassan Al Marzouqi and Captain Ali Haji Al Balushi, Head of the Customer Happiness Section.
According to Dubai Police, the businessman had withdrawn Dh200,000 from a bank and placed the amount inside a paper envelope before heading towards his vehicle. In his haste, the envelope was not properly sealed, causing one bundle containing Dh100,000 to fall onto the ground without him noticing.
The businessman then drove away from the location, unaware that a significant amount of money had slipped from the envelope in the parking area.
A short while later, Mohi arrived at the same location and spotted the cash lying in front of him. Instead of leaving the scene, he photographed the money and documented the exact location where he found it before heading directly to Al Raffa Police Station.
Quick action
Police officers launched an investigation immediately after receiving the cash and details provided by Mohi. Authorities were able to identify the owner and contact him within three hours.
The businessman was reportedly shocked to learn that he had dropped the money during his trip from the bank. He later visited the police station to recover the amount and thanked both Dubai Police and Mohi for their swift action.
Dubai Police said the incident reflected the strong values of honesty and social responsibility within UAE society.
Police honour
Colonel bin Hudaiba said Dubai Police remain committed to recognising members of the public who demonstrate integrity by handing over lost belongings to authorities so they can be returned to their rightful owners.
He praised Mohi for his honesty and sense of responsibility, noting that such actions reinforce Dubai’s reputation for safety and security.
Photographs released by Dubai Police showed Mohi receiving recognition at Al Raffa Police Station alongside senior officers following the successful return of the cash.
