New traffic rules: Abu Dhabi’s young motorists risk year-long ban for reaching 24 points twice
Violations like red-light running carry highest penalty points
ABU DHABI – The Abu Dhabi Police have announced new regulations for young and probationary drivers, introducing tougher measures against repeat traffic violations.
Under the revised system, drivers under 21 who repeatedly reach the maximum limit of 24 traffic points during their probationary period will have their licences revoked. They will be barred from reapplying for a full year.
The new rules aim to enhance road safety and reduce reckless driving among younger motorists. The regulations were explained by Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Khalfan Al Kaabi from the Traffic Points Programme Department during Abu Dhabi Police’s Safety and Security broadcast.
Probationary drivers
Under the updated system, a first-time accumulation of 24 points by a driver under 21 results in a six-month licence suspension. Alternatively, the motorist may pay Dh2,400 to attend a one-day traffic rehabilitation course to recover the licence sooner.
However, if the same driver again reaches the 24-point limit during their probationary period, the licence will be revoked permanently, and they must wait one year before applying for a new one.
Permanent licence holders
Drivers aged 21 and above, holding permanent licences, face a three-month suspension or must attend a Dh2,400 rehabilitation course if they hit the 24-point limit for the first time. If they repeat the offence within a year, the suspension extends to six months, along with the same course and fee.
Traffic points explained
Lieutenant Colonel Al Kaabi clarified that different offences carry varying penalties, with serious violations attracting higher points. For example, running a red light incurs 12 points, while endangering lives carries 23 points. Points remain on a driver’s record for one year and are removed only if the total never reaches 24 within that period.
Abu Dhabi authorities continue to reinforce safe driving habits, with recent measures including the introduction of variable speed limits on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street.
