DUBAI – For most UAE residents, the Emirates ID is simply a document that proves identity and residency.

Issued by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), the card is legally required and carried almost everywhere. Yet behind its familiar appearance lies a powerful digital tool that can simplify everyday life in surprising ways.

The embedded chip stores more than 20 pieces of personal and biometric information, helping government agencies, healthcare providers, banks and businesses verify identities securely. Beyond official transactions, the card can also unlock practical services that many residents may not be taking full advantage of.

Here are seven ways the Emirates ID can make life easier across the UAE.

Travel more easily across borders

The Emirates ID has become an important travel companion for many UAE residents and citizens.

UAE citizens can use the card as a travel document when visiting Gulf Cooperation Council countries. For residents travelling to destinations that offer visa-on-arrival facilities, such as Georgia and Azerbaijan, the Emirates ID is often required alongside passports and other travel documents.

The card can also play an important role when returning to the UAE, particularly from countries where airlines and immigration authorities may request proof of UAE residency before boarding.

Skip queues at airport Smart Gates

Dubai International Airport’s Smart Gates have transformed the arrival and departure experience for millions of travellers.

The automated border control system uses facial recognition technology linked to immigration databases. Eligible travellers can register their Emirates ID and use the card to pass through immigration checkpoints more quickly.

To use the system, travellers simply scan their Emirates ID, look into the facial recognition camera and follow the instructions displayed on screen. Glasses and hats should be removed to ensure accurate identification.

Access government services instantly

A valid Emirates ID is the key to thousands of government-related transactions across the UAE.

Whether applying for a driving licence, registering a tenancy contract, paying traffic fines, opening utility accounts or activating mobile services, the card is required for identity verification.

It is also essential for registering with UAE Pass, the country's official digital identity platform. UAE Pass allows residents and citizens to access and sign documents digitally across a wide range of government and private-sector services.

Pay for fuel without using a bank card

At ADNOC service stations, residents can use their Emirates ID as a payment tool after linking it to an ADNOC Wallet account.

After downloading the ADNOC Distribution app, users can create a wallet, add funds and connect their Emirates ID as the preferred payment method. Once linked, the card can be inserted into payment terminals at participating stations to pay for fuel.

The same system can also be used for purchases at ADNOC Oasis convenience stores and for vehicle wash services, allowing customers to manage transport-related spending from a single wallet.

Withdraw cash from selected ATMs

Several UAE banks have integrated Emirates ID functionality into their ATM services, reducing reliance on traditional bank cards.

Customers of banks including Emirates NBD, Emirates Islamic, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Al Hilal Bank and Mashreq can access cash withdrawal services through their Emirates ID, subject to each bank’s procedures and eligibility requirements.

In most cases, customers activate the feature through mobile banking applications and receive a one-time password on their registered mobile number before cash is released. The additional verification layer enhances security while providing a convenient alternative to carrying physical bank cards.

Use it as a health insurance card

Forgetting a health insurance card no longer has to disrupt a medical appointment.

Since health insurance records have been linked to Emirates IDs, hospitals, clinics and medical centres can often retrieve insurance information directly through the card. Healthcare providers can access policy details and confirm coverage by reading the information linked to the Emirates ID.

This integration has streamlined administrative processes for patients while reducing the need to carry multiple cards and documents during healthcare visits.

Unlock resident-only discounts and special offers

One of the most popular benefits of carrying an Emirates ID comes in the form of exclusive savings.

Hotels, resorts, attractions, theme parks and entertainment venues across the UAE frequently offer discounted rates for residents. These promotions are often available throughout the year and become especially common during summer campaigns, public holidays and seasonal tourism initiatives.

Many venues require only a valid Emirates ID to verify residency status and apply the discounted rate. From luxury staycations and family attractions to dining experiences and leisure activities, the card can open the door to significant savings that tourists do not receive.
