DUBAI: Overseas Pakistanis can now benefit from a 120-day tax-free mobile registration for each visit to Pakistan, under a newly launched initiative by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced that this service is available via the free and automated Temporary Mobile Registration System, designed to simplify digital access for overseas visitors.

Available through the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) portal, this facility allows mobile devices brought into Pakistan to function seamlessly on local networks – without any FBR-imposed tax or duty – for up to four months per visit.

How to register

Eligible users can register their mobile phones by visiting the official wesbite. The process is simple and does not require manual approval. Overseas visitors only need to provide valid travel documents such as a passport and visa or entry stamp to complete registration under the Temporary Registration option.

The system ensures continued mobile access during short-term stays and aligns with Pakistan’s digital inclusion goals. Once the 120-day period expires, users can reapply for the exemption—provided they leave and re-enter the country.

Easing connectivity woes

The new policy has been widely welcomed by the Pakistani diaspora, many of whom have faced issues with blocked devices during short trips. It also removes the financial burden of tax on personal devices, making communication for work, travel, or family matters smoother and more affordable.

Despite recent speculation, the PTA has clarified that there is no blanket tax waiver on imported phones – this facility is strictly for temporary registration during an overseas Pakistani’s stay.

Overseas Pakistanis interested in availing this tax-free service can log in to the DIRBS portal for further details and step-by-step registration.
