Two new marine stations transform travel along Dubai Creek
Cultural heritage preserved with modern facilities for abra riders
DUBAI’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has inaugurated the Old Dubai Souq and Al Sabkha marine transport stations, giving a major boost to the city’s Creek transport network.
Both stations form the final phase of a development programme designed to enhance marine facilities while preserving the cultural identity of Old Dubai.
Passenger demand remains strong, with marine transport modes recording 9.7 million riders in the first half of 2025.
What has changed?
The newly delivered stations follow the model of previous upgrades at Bur Dubai and Old Deira Souq.
Enhancements include a 50% expansion of shaded waiting areas, new retail outlets, and modernised amenities for abra riders. RTA has also ensured compliance with Dubai’s Code for People of Determination, expanding accessible spaces across the stations.
How was sustainability addressed?
Eco-friendly materials were used in constructing the new marine berths, while improved lighting has been introduced to ensure safety and energy efficiency. The upgrades also support economic efficiency, as both stations were developed simultaneously to reduce costs and optimise resources.
Where is comfort improved?
In a first for abra operators, RTA has introduced air-conditioned rest areas, significantly improving the working environment for crews of the traditional wooden abras.

Alongside these new stations, five other marine stations were upgraded in May, and since June, free Wi-Fi has been made available across all public transport stations in Dubai.
