Abu Dhabi earns top spot for night safety among global destinations
DUBAI has earned the third spot on a global list of the most scenic cities to explore after dark, according to a new 2025 survey by UK-based travel specialists Travelbag.
The ranking reflects the city’s growing reputation as a nocturnal hotspot, combining safety, aesthetics, and vibrant nightlife to offer one of the best after-dark experiences anywhere in the world.
The study reviewed over 100 global cities and assessed their appeal for "noctourism" – a rising travel trend this year defined by exploring destinations during the evening and night hours. Criteria included the number of Instagram hashtags linked to the city’s nightscape, levels of light and noise pollution, the number of late-night venues, and how safe it is to walk alone after dark.
Scenic and safe
Dubai stands out with over 29,600 Instagram hashtags showcasing its skyline and evening activities. While it features 190 late-night venues – fewer than cities like New York or Tokyo – the city’s unique blend of safety and high-end experiences contributes to its elevated ranking.
Dubai recorded a nighttime safety score of 83 out of 100, one of the highest among the cities analysed. It also maintained a moderate pollution rating of 53, adding to the overall quality of the nocturnal atmosphere.
According to Travelbag’s Destination Executive for the Middle East and Indian Ocean, Danny Hugill, the Emirati city transforms after sunset. “It’s cooler in the evenings, even in summer, making it an ideal time to discover Dubai’s cultural spots, waterfront attractions, and rooftop dining experiences,” Hugill noted.
The UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, also made a strong impression in the study. Ranked twelfth overall, it was named the safest city to explore at night, with a safety score of 87 out of 100 – the highest among all destinations surveyed. Though the number of late-night venues is comparatively limited at 62, the city’s peaceful environment, low pollution score of 47, and consistent popularity contributed to its position on the list.
Global nighttime leaders
Topping the ranking is New York City, which combines a massive volume of Instagram activity with a sprawling network of late-night venues. The American city boasts 40,800 nighttime-related Instagram hashtags, a light and noise pollution score of 69, a safety score of 46, and a staggering 2,302 late-night venues.
Tokyo, Japan’s capital, secured second place with 19,100 Instagram hashtags, a relatively low pollution index of 46, and a strong safety score of 75. Its 996 late-night venues range from izakayas and karaoke spots to neon-lit urban streets that remain lively well past midnight.
Singapore, placed fourth, earned high marks as the most scenic city in Southeast Asia. With 16,500 Instagram hashtags and a dynamic nightlife, the Lion City continues to be a regional favourite among travellers.
Muscat, the capital of Oman, came in fifth. Though not heavily hashtagged, Muscat stood out for its unmatched stargazing opportunities. With a light pollution score of 30 and a pollution index of 10.0, the desert city offers some of the clearest skies for night-time exploration.
Evolving travel trends
The study from Travelbag arrives amid a surge in interest in after-dark travel. In 2025, Google search volumes for nocturnal tourism activities have spiked, with a 164% increase in interest for night festivals and a 33% rise in stargazing tourism.
To generate the list, Travelbag examined Instagram hashtag volumes, pollution levels, safety scores, and the availability of late-night experiences in major global cities. Cities were then scored to determine their ranking for scenic nighttime exploration.
Vienna emerged as the top short-haul destination in the study. With 1,233 late-night venues and a nighttime safety score of 67.10, the Austrian capital offers both charm and reassurance to visitors venturing out after dark.
Taipei, Taiwan, closely followed Abu Dhabi in safety, recording a score of 85, while Dubai rounded out the top three safest cities, reaffirming the UAE's strong positioning for secure nocturnal travel.
A safe night out
Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai consistently feature at the top of global safety indices, particularly when it comes to walking alone at night. These latest rankings underline the UAE’s commitment to maintaining secure, well-lit, and visitor-friendly environments that enable after-dark exploration without concern.
As interest in noctourism continues to grow in 2025, the UAE’s major cities are uniquely positioned to lead the charge – offering a blend of safety, culture, luxury, and night-time beauty few destinations can rival.
