Archer Aviation appoints ex-Italian attaché to lead UAE air taxi operations
Cristiano Tartaglione brings experience from air force, diplomacy, and global aerospace strategy
ABU DHABI: Archer Aviation, a leading innovator in electric air mobility, has appointed retired Brigadier General Cristiano Tartaglione as Chief Operating Officer for its United Arab Emirates operations.
The announcement marks a pivotal step in Archer’s journey to bring commercial electric air taxi services to the region.
Who is Cristiano Tartaglione?
Tartaglione, a seasoned aviation leader and former Italian Defense Attaché to the UAE, will spearhead the company’s operational activities across the Emirates. His appointment is timed with Archer’s strategic expansion into the Middle East, where it is working closely with regulators and partners to establish a viable, sustainable air taxi network.
Known for its cutting-edge Midnight aircraft, Archer aims to revolutionise urban transportation by replacing traditional 60–90 minute car commutes with 10–20 minute electric flights. The company’s eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft are built for safety, sustainability and cost competitiveness, and promise significantly reduced noise levels compared to helicopters.
Operational readiness
Tartaglione will lead the development of local infrastructure, oversee regulatory alignment and manage the recruitment and mentoring of a UAE-based team. He is expected to collaborate closely with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and other government entities to ensure safe and timely deployment.
With over 30 years of experience in the Italian Air Force, Tartaglione brings a wealth of operational knowledge. His military tenure included commanding multinational air operations and leading advanced fighter jet maintenance programmes. Accumulating more than 3,500 hours as a fighter pilot, he later transitioned into advising aerospace and defence firms across the Middle East and Europe.
“I am honoured to join Archer Aviation at such a critical stage of growth as we prepare for commercial launch,” said Tartaglione. “My focus will be on driving operational readiness, regulatory alignment and long-term value as we launch safe and scalable air mobility services in the region.”
Helipad milestone
The appointment comes shortly after Archer secured GCAA design approval for the transformation of the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal helipad. The site will become the country’s first hybrid heliport, enabling both helicopter and eVTOL aircraft operations – a crucial development in Archer’s infrastructure roadmap.
