Archer completes first Midnight eVTOL test flight in Abu Dhabi
UAE-specific flight tested for heat, dust and humidity resistance
ABU DHABI: Archer Aviation has marked a significant leap forward in urban air mobility by successfully completing its first test flight of the Midnight electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft at Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi.
Conducted under the blazing summer sun today, the flight was designed to assess the aircraft’s capabilities in real-world UAE conditions, including extreme heat, humidity and dust exposure.
The flight was observed by high-level officials from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), Integrated Transport Centre, Abu Dhabi Aviation and Abu Dhabi Airports, along with representatives from Archer’s regional partners. With the UAE set to be Archer’s first Launch Edition market, the event signalled the start of an ambitious air taxi ecosystem.
UAE-specific testing
Archer’s testing programme, supported by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, is focused on preparing for commercial deployment. The aircraft, designed to carry four passengers and a pilot, can reach speeds of 241kph with a range of 150km. During the test, the Midnight performed a vertical take-off, providing data critical to ongoing certification and commercialisation efforts in the UAE and other future markets.
The initiative also aligns with the GCAA’s announcement of the world’s first regulatory framework for hybrid operations, enabling eVTOLs and helicopters to share infrastructure.
Launch plans underway
Archer plans to expand its test programme through the summer, with commercial services targeted for early 2026. The first hybrid heliport is expected to open at Mina Zayed Cruise Terminal by the end of 2025, strategically located near Saadiyat Island and Louvre Abu Dhabi. Archer’s UAE General Manager, Talib Alhinai, confirmed that aircraft designed specifically for regional conditions would lead the testing phase, with pilot-operated versions to follow.
Future routes are expected to align with existing helicopter flight paths. Integration with land and sea transport – such as Etihad Rail and ferry services – is also under consideration to ensure door-to-door connectivity.
Economic & technological boost
Archer, a $6.26 billion company listed on NYSE (ACHR), recently raised $850 million via direct stock offering to support global rollout. The firm boasts strong liquidity, holding more cash than debt, and partnerships with the Department of Defense and United Airlines.
Omran Malek of ADIO emphasised that the test was just the beginning: “We are not only launching a flying taxi service, but an entire ecosystem – from training and manufacturing to operations.” Manufacturing of the Midnight aircraft is scheduled to begin in Al Ain in 2027, with exports to follow due to strong regional interest.
How much will it cost?
Though pricing remains unfinalised, earlier reports suggested fares could range from Dh300 to Dh350 for inner-city journeys. Archer is targeting affordability, with scalable pricing aimed at making the service accessible to the public.
