Aircraft can reach 322 km/h and fly up to 161 kilometres
DUBAI has officially completed the region’s first test flight of the all-electric Joby Aerial Taxi, a major milestone announced by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.
The successful demonstration, made possible through a partnership between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and California-based Joby Aviation, signals a new chapter in urban mobility and the city’s push for sustainable, autonomous transport.
Unveiled at the Museum of the Future earlier this year, the prototype aircraft is part of Dubai’s commitment to innovation, in line with the Dubai Self-Driving Strategy. The initiative aims to make 25 percent of all transport self-driving by 2030.
“The all-electric aerial taxi represents a new leap in eco-friendly urban mobility – reducing travel times, enhancing quality of life, and advancing sustainable development. This pioneering initiative is part of the UAE’s broader vision to lead the world in innovation and the deployment of advanced technologies. Our nation's skies have opened to new possibilities, and the best is yet to come,” the Crown Prince said in post on X.

Cutting-edge innovation
The Joby S4 aerial taxi is a fully electric aircraft fitted with six rotors and four battery packs. It accommodates four passengers and a pilot, offering vertical take-off and landing capabilities. The aircraft boasts a top speed of 322 kilometres per hour and a maximum range of 161 kilometres, all while maintaining low noise levels and high safety standards.
Key routes and connectivity
Initial operations will cover strategic routes including Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah. A journey from the airport to the Palm will take about 12 minutes – dramatically cutting travel time compared to the 45-minute trip by car. The aerial taxi network will be seamlessly integrated with Dubai’s broader transport system, complementing metro, buses, and e-scooters.
Vertiport development
Supporting infrastructure is already underway with plans for the world’s first vertiport network. The first facility will accommodate up to 42,000 landings per year and serve around 170,000 passengers. Skyports Infrastructure, a UK-based firm, will handle construction and operations of the vertiports, while Joby Aviation will oversee the aircraft.
RTA will coordinate the integration of these new services into Dubai’s existing transport ecosystem, ensuring smooth implementation and customer experience.
