Months-long transformation delivers 100-tonne payload with advanced cargo systems
DUBAI – Emirates SkyCargo has unveiled the engineering journey behind the transformation of one of its Boeing 777-300ER passenger aircraft into a dedicated Special Freighter (SF), marking another milestone in the carrier’s expanding cargo operations.
The converted aircraft, registered A6-EBK, has already entered commercial service, transporting goods across multiple international markets through Dubai. The move comes as demand for global air cargo capacity continues to grow, fuelled by rising cross-border trade and the rapid expansion of e-commerce.

Unlike the factory-built Boeing 777-F freighters that form part of Emirates SkyCargo’s fleet, A6-EBK began its life carrying passengers before undergoing an extensive conversion programme spanning several months. The result is a dedicated cargo aircraft capable of transporting up to 100 tonnes of freight while meeting stringent international safety and operational standards.
Major overhaul
Transforming a passenger-configured Boeing 777-300ER into a cargo-only aircraft required far more than removing passenger seats and installing a cargo door. The conversion involved redesigning major structural elements, onboard systems and operational features while preserving the aircraft’s aerodynamic performance and structural integrity.
The process began with stripping the aircraft’s cabin completely. Seats, overhead storage bins, galleys and lavatories were removed to create space for cargo operations and allow engineers to modify the interior for palletised freight.

One of the most significant engineering tasks was creating a large maindeck cargo door, a defining feature of dedicated freighters. Installing the door required cutting into the fuselage and reinforcing surrounding structures to maintain the aircraft’s strength and safety.
At the front of the main deck, engineers installed a rigid 9G barrier capable of absorbing impact forces up to nine times the force of gravity. This protective structure matches the safety standards found in factory-produced freighters and safeguards the flight deck in the event of cargo movement during flight.
The aircraft was also equipped with a crew rest area and supplementary seating to accommodate additional personnel who may travel on specialised cargo missions, including grooms accompanying valuable thoroughbred racehorses. Meanwhile, the flight deck received additional controls to manage cargo-specific environmental and safety systems.
Cargo systems
Supporting heavy freight required substantial structural modifications beneath the cabin floor. The original passenger floor structure was removed and replaced with reinforced floor beams capable of handling concentrated loads generated by heavy cargo pallets and specialised loading equipment.
Engineers also installed a fully integrated cargo loading system featuring powered rollers, guides and locking mechanisms, enabling ground teams to load and secure large cargo units efficiently before departure.
Safety remained a central focus throughout the conversion. The aircraft received an advanced cargo monitoring system incorporating smoke detection and fire suppression technologies designed specifically for freight operations.
These upgrades ensure the aircraft can safely transport a broad range of cargo, from general merchandise to high-value and specialised shipments moving through Emirates SkyCargo’s global network.
Specialised transport
The converted aircraft has also been adapted to support Emirates SkyCargo’s portfolio of specialised cargo products, including pharmaceuticals, bio-innovations and perishable goods that require carefully controlled temperatures throughout their journey.
During the conversion, the aircraft’s environmental control system was modified to regulate airflow, ventilation and onboard temperatures to meet strict shipment requirements. Some consignments transported by the airline require temperatures to be maintained as low as 5 degrees Centigrade.
Other electrical systems were also upgraded to support cargo operations, ensuring the aircraft can safely transport sensitive and temperature-controlled shipments across long-haul routes.
Fleet expansion
Before entering commercial service, the aircraft underwent an extensive certification programme to demonstrate compliance with international regulatory standards covering structural strength, systems reliability, fire protection and flight performance.

The approval process included comprehensive documentation, ground testing and flight evaluations before the aircraft received clearance to begin transporting cargo.
Following certification, A6-EBK was repainted in the latest Emirates SkyCargo livery before completing its maiden commercial flight, where it received a traditional water cannon salute.
The converted Boeing 777-300ERSF is the latest addition to Emirates SkyCargo’s growing fleet, which serves more than 150 destinations across six continents. The expansion reflects increasing global demand for dedicated air freight capacity as businesses continue moving goods to international markets.
Since March 2026, Emirates SkyCargo has taken delivery of six factory-built Boeing 777-F freighters alongside the newly converted aircraft. The airline is scheduled to receive another four Boeing 777-F production freighters and one additional converted Boeing 777-300ER Special Freighter later this year, further strengthening its cargo network and providing customers with greater flexibility across key global trade routes.
