Zayed National Museum named among world’s most beautiful museums in 2026
Prestigious UNESCO-linked award highlights architectural innovation and sustainability
ABU DHABI – The Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi has been named among the World’s Most Beautiful Museums 2026 by Prix Versailles, an international architecture and design award presented annually at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
The recognition places the UAE’s national museum among a select group of institutions celebrated for design excellence and cultural impact. It is also the only museum from the region to feature on this year’s list.
The accolade highlights the museum’s architectural vision, environmental innovation and contribution to global cultural landscapes. Only seven museums worldwide were selected for the 2026 edition, with three set to receive additional World Titles later this year.
Design
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the museum is located in Saadiyat Cultural District and spans more than 56,000 square metres. Its defining feature is a cluster of five steel towers inspired by the wing of a falcon in flight, reflecting the UAE’s long-standing falconry heritage. Rising to 123 metres, the structure is the tallest within the district.
The towers also serve a functional purpose, acting as thermal chimneys that regulate airflow naturally. The building’s sculpted mound mirrors the UAE’s landscape and helps reduce solar heat gain, integrating sustainability into the overall design.
Cultural scope
The surrounding Al Masar Garden incorporates native plant species alongside traditional falaj irrigation systems, extending the museum’s environmental narrative. Inside, six permanent galleries present more than 300,000 years of human history in the region, from early archaeological discoveries to the formation of the UAE.
The museum also honours the legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE, highlighting his role in shaping national identity and preserving cultural heritage.
The World’s Most Beautiful Museums category was introduced in 2024 by Prix Versailles, with seven institutions shortlisted annually. The 2026 list includes museums in China, Japan, Lithuania, Uzbekistan and the United States, reflecting a diverse global representation of architectural excellence.
Three of the shortlisted museums will go on to receive further distinctions, including the Prix Versailles World Title and special prizes for interior and exterior design.
