Watch: RTA completes 595 new bus shelters across key Dubai districts
Project reaches 89% completion with upgrades across dense urban areas
DUBAI — Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has completed 595 public bus passenger shelters as part of an extensive project to install 762 shelters across key districts in the emirate.
The development introduces contemporary designs and enhanced services aimed at elevating the experience of public transport users. The project is now 89% complete and supports bus routes that, in some locations, exceed ten routes per shelter. These facilities cater to a network used by more than 192 million passengers each year.
The RTA said the upgraded shelters form part of a wider strategy to strengthen the public transport system and accommodate the city’s expanding population. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, said the project advances Dubai’s goal of building an integrated urban environment that encourages residents and visitors to choose public transport. He highlighted the focus on comfort, modernity, safety, and sustainability.
Shelter design
Al Tayer said the design brief ensured that aesthetic elements were aligned with functional requirements, offering services that support a more seamless mobility experience. He noted that some shelters serve more than ten routes, which improves network efficiency, reduces travel times, and increases public confidence in the system.
The selection of locations took into account high-density areas, future operational needs, and connectivity with soft mobility options.
Shelter categories
The RTA classified the new shelters into four categories based on daily passenger volume. A primary stop serves more than 750 passengers a day. A secondary stop accommodates between 250 and 750 passengers. A basic stop caters to 100 to 250 passengers. A boarding and alighting stop is designed for fewer than 100 passengers.
Portions of the primary shelters incorporate air-conditioned areas, along with shaded outdoor seating and dedicated advertising spaces.
Passenger facilities
Each shelter includes an information display screen providing route maps, schedules, and headway details. The upgrade is intended to help passengers plan their journeys more easily and streamline movement across the network.
Universal access
The design fully complies with the Dubai Universal Design Code. Dedicated areas for wheelchair users are provided in support of the “My Community… A City for Everyone” initiative, which aims to ensure complete accessibility for People of Determination. The RTA said these enhancements reflect its commitment to inclusivity as Dubai continues to build a transport system aligned with future growth and mobility trends.
