Dubai announces Islamic New Year 2026 holiday for government employees
Shift-based services to maintain operational continuity
DUBAI – Government employees in Dubai will enjoy a day off on Monday, June 15, after authorities confirmed the official holiday for the Islamic New Year 1448 AH.
The announcement means government entities, departments and institutions across the emirate will close for the occasion before resuming normal operations the following day.
The decision was announced by the Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR), which confirmed that official working hours will resume on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
Three-day break
The announcement follows the UAE’s declaration of June 15 as a public holiday for both public and private sector employees nationwide, creating a three-day weekend for many workers across the country.
While most government offices will be closed during the holiday, entities operating on a shift basis, as well as those responsible for public services and managing public facilities, may determine their own schedules according to operational requirements. The measure is intended to ensure uninterrupted services and maintain efficiency throughout the holiday period.
Islamic New Year
The Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar. The occasion commemorates the Hijra, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina, a defining event in Islamic history.
Observed across the Muslim world, the Islamic New Year is one of the official public holidays recognised in the UAE. Unlike some religious occasions marked by large public festivities, the day is generally associated with reflection and the start of a new year in the Islamic calendar.
In its statement, DGHR extended congratulations and best wishes to the UAE leadership, government and people, as well as Arab and Islamic nations, expressing hopes for continued prosperity, stability and progress for the country and its people.
